Overnight stays in hotel establishments in the Basque Country in October 2021 were up 155.9% on October 2020
Both bed and room occupancy rates exceeded those of the previous year by 30 percentage points
During October 2021, the number of visitors and overnight stays recorded at hotel establishments in the Basque Country rose to 286,392 and 536,749, respectively, according to Eustat data.
Visitor numbers had therefore recovered by 161.8% and overnight stays by 155.9% in relation to October 2020. The comparison with October 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic, reveals that these figures have practically recovered. Visitor numbers represented 96.6% of those of October 2019 and overnight stays 93.2%.
In Álava, there were 38,976 visitors and 76,842 overnight stays in October, 122.6% and 130.8% more than in the same month of the previous year, respectively. In Bizkaia, visitor numbers increased by 187.7% and overnight stays were up 155.0% in October 2021, reaching a total of 125,768 and 232,883, respectively. Lastly, in Gipuzkoa, the number of visitors and overnight stays stood at 121,648 and 227,024 in October 2021, following a year-on-year rise of 152.6% in visitor numbers and 166.8% in overnight stays.
The average length of stay in October 2021 was 1.87 days in the Basque Country as a whole, slightly below that obtained in the same month of 2020, which was 1.92 days. In October 2019 this variable stood at 1.94 days.
As regards the occupancy rates in October 2021, figures for the Basque Country as a whole reached 54.2% in the case of beds and 64.4% in the case of rooms. Compared to October 2020, the increases stood at 28.7 and 31.1 percentage points, respectively. However, in relation to October 2019, the differences in occupancy rates were negative in both cases: down 5.6 percentage points in the case of the bed occupancy rate and 8.8 points in that of rooms.
Profitability, measured using the ADR or average daily rate, in the Basque Country as a whole reached 88.51 euros. At the provincial level, Gipuzkoa stood out with 95.03 euros, followed by Bizkaia with 85.01 euros and Álava with 80.82 euros. By provincial capitals, the ADR rose to 113.99 euros in Donostia-San Sebastián, 94.30 euros in Bilbao and 65.56 euros in Vitoria-Gasteiz. All these figures imply some significant year-on-year increases, of 38.6% in Bilbao, 22.2% in San Sebastian and 10.6% in Vitoria-Gasteiz.
The revenue per available room (RevPAR) at the Basque Country level stood at 57.03 euros in October 2021. In the case of Gipuzkoa, it reached 63.73 euros, in Álava it was 56.15 euros and in Bizkaia it stood at 51.71 euros. The percentage increase in respect of the same month of 2020 showed a notable improvement in the sector, with 162.4% in Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia, 149.9% in Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa and 103.7% in Álava.
