Visitor numbers to hotels, rural accommodation and tourist apartments as a whole in the Basque Country increased by 15.2% in February 2020

The number of visitors registered in tourist apartments rose by 20.3%

In hotels, rural accommodation and tourist apartments as a whole, there were 218,552 visitors in February 2020, which was an increase of 15.2% on the same month of the previous year, according to EUSTAT data. It should be remembered that 2020 is a leap year and February therefore has an extra day. 47.7% of the total number of visitors to the Basque Country was concentrated in Bizkaia, and total visitor numbers rose by 15.9%. In Gipuzkoa, which accumulated 38.9% of visitors to the Basque Country, there was an increase of 13.9% and in Álava, with 13.3% of visitors, there was a rise of 16.6%.

Overnight stays in the total number of establishments analysed were up 13.1% in February 2020 in respect of February 2019. In Bizkaia overnight stays were up 11.4%, in Álava 13.4% and in Gipuzkoa 15.1%.

Tourist apartments

The number of overnight stays registered in tourist apartments in the Basque Country in February 2020 stood at 19,331, which was a decrease of 2.5% on those registered in February of the previous year. The number of overnight stays was up 1.3% in Bizkaia and 0.4% in Álava, whereas there was a drop of 9.1% in Gipuzkoa.

There were 5,307 visitors registered in tourist apartments in the Basque Country in February 2020, which was a rise of 20.3% compared to the same month of the previous year. Visitor numbers were up 42.6% in Gipuzkoa, 29.4% in Álava and 5.7% in Bizkaia.

This February the average length of stay was 3.64 days, below the average length of stay of 4.50 days in February 2019. In Álava there was a drop from 12.80 days last year to 9.93 days in February of this year; in Bizkaia it was down from 2.81 days to 2.69 days; and in Gipuzkoa, the average length of stay decreased from 4.72 days in February 2019 to 3.01 days in February 2020.
