Exports of goods from the Basque Country increased by 1.4% in January 2020
Exports of Energy products tripled and non-energy product exports were down 6.6%.
In January 2020 there was a rise in exports of goods from the Basque Country of 1.4% in year-on-year terms, according to EUSTAT data. They totalled 1,968.6 million euros compared to 1,941.4 million in the same month of the previous year. Exports of Energy products increased by 234.0% and exports of Non-energy products decreased by 6.6%.
Bizkaia is the province that registered the best performance, with an increase in exports of 14.5%; in Gipuzkoa exports fell by 8.8%, and in Álava they were down 2.7%.
Imports of goods to the Basque Country dropped by 5.9%, with a total of 1,573.8 million euros. Energy imports were up 0.3%, and Non-energy imports were down 8.2%.
Imports decreased in the three provinces, above all in Gipuzkoa where they were down 19.7%, followed by Álava (-2.1%) and Bizkaia (-1.6%).
Analysing exports by branches of activity (A86), there was a decrease in Motor Vehicles, down 7.2%; in contrast, growth in Coke Plants & Oil Refining more than tripled and Other Transport Material achieved an increase of 30.1% There were also decreases in Iron & Steel Products (-18.9%), Metal Products (-19.5%) and Rubber Products (-2.2%).
A more detailed look reveals that, in January, the ten main export duty groups accounted for 47.5% of exports, with a combined value of 934.8 million euros. The following groups stood out with varying increases in respect of the same month of the previous year: Refined Petroleum Oils (278.8% and 211.1 million), Passenger cars with fewer than 10 seats (1.2% and 190.9 million) and Diesel and electric motor units for railway tracks and motorised trams (33.3% and 55.2 million). However, there were percentage declines in Aluminium sheets and strips of a thickness exceeding 2.2 mm (-32.0% and 28.8 million), Goods Transport Vehicles (-20.5% and 122.9 million), Iron or non-alloy steel sections (-20.0% and 29.9 million), Vehicle parts and accessories (-14.7% and 136.4 million) and New rubber tyres (-2.6% and 84.6 million).
This month five countries - France, Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands - are our main clients, absorbing 54.6% (1,074.7 million euros) of total exports from the Basque Country. Four of them belong to the EU-28, an entity that with 1,415.5 million exported accounts for 71.9% of our exports.
Analysing imports by branches of activity (A86), it can be observed that the largest, Extraction and Petroleum Industries (26.1% of the total) saw an increase of 7.3% compared to the same month of the previous year, as did Manufacture of motor vehicles, which was up by exactly the same percentage (7.3%). However, if we only consider the four largest branches, Iron and Steel Products were down 20.1% and General Use Machinery fell by 3.5%.
This month Germany was our main supplier of goods with a total of 204.1 million euros, followed by Russia with 147.5 million, France (140.4 million), China (114.9 million) and Italy (67.6 million).
