INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION INDEX. FEBRUARY 2020

Industrial activity in the Basque Country rose by 1.7% in February 2020

Compared to the previous month, January 2020, the industrial production index increased by 1.6%

Industrial production of the Basque Country in February 2020 was up 1.7% compared to the same month of 2019, in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data.

Compared to the previous month, January 2020, the industrial production of the Basque Country rose by 1.6%, once seasonal effects had been corrected.

The index showed an upward trend for all the major industrial sectors in February 2020 compared to February 2019. Capital Goods were up 5.8% and Intermediate Goods rose by 1.2%, while both Energy and Consumer Goods, as a whole, increased by 2.5%. Within the latter, Consumer Durables were up by 9.5% and Consumer Non-durables increased by 1.0%.

The month-on-month variation, February 2020 on January 2020, registered positive trends for most of the major industrial sectors: Capital Goods were up 5.6%, Intermediate Goods increased by 2.4% and Consumer Goods, as a whole, grew by 0.6%, due to the 3.1% rise in Consumer Durables whereas Consumer Non-Durables remained unchanged (0.0%). Energy fell by 3.3%.

Among the largest sectors in Basque industry, those that saw the most significant growth in February 2020 with regards to year-on-year variations were: Electrical Material & Equipment, with an increase of 10.5%; Transport Material, which was up 9.9% and Machinery & Equipment, which rose by 5.8%. In contrast, there were decreases in the sectors of Timber, Paper & Graphic Arts, which posted a year-on-year regression of 4.5%, and Metallurgy & Metal Products, with a fall of 0.7%.

By province, the year-on-year performance of the Industrial Production Index for the month of February was positive in Álava, where it rose by 7.8% and in Gipuzkoa, which posted a rise of 1.7%. On the other hand, in Bizkaia the Index was down 1.9%.
