Industrial activity in the Basque Country fell by 2.5% in January 2020
Compared to the previous month, December 2019, the industrial production index of the Basque Country remained unchanged (0.0%)
Industrial production of the Basque Country in January 2020 fell by 2.5% compared to the same month of 2019, in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data.
Compared to the previous month, December 2019, the industrial production of the Basque Country remained unchanged (0.0%), once seasonal effects had been corrected.
There were positive and negative variations in the index of the major industrial sectors in January 2020 compared to January 2019. Energy rose by 7.3% and Consumer Durables, as a whole, were up 4.1%. Within these, Consumer Non-durables, increased by 5.0%, while Consumer Durables rose by 0.6%. By contrast, Intermediate Goods were down by 6.2% and Capital Goods fell by 3.3%.
The month-on-month variation, January 2020 on January 2019, registered positive trends for most of the major industrial sectors: Capital Goods were up 3.5%, Energy increased by 2.9% and Consumer Goods as a whole grew by 2.8%, due to the 3.3% rise in Consumer Non-Durables and the 0.7% increase in Consumer Durables. Intermediate Goods, on the other hand, were down 1.5%.
Among the largest sectors in Basque industry, those that saw the most significant growth in the month of January 2020 with regards to year-on-year variations were: Electricity, Gas & Steam, with an increase of 9.0% and Food, Beverages & Tobacco, which was up 3.9%. In contrast, the largest decreases occurred in the sectors of Transport Material, which posted a year-on-year regression of 9.5%, Metallurgy & Metal Products, down 7.3% and Timber, Paper & Graphic Arts with a year-on-year decrease of 4.2%.
By province, the year-on-year performance of the Industrial Production Index for the month of January was negative in the three provinces. In Álava there was a drop of 3.6%, Gipuzkoa recorded a fall of 3.0%, while in Bizkaia the index was down 1.3%.
