Overnight stays in tourist apartments in the Basque Country increased by 7.6% in September 2019
The balance of tourists in the three summer months, July, August, and September, closed with a growth of 2.6%
Overnight stays registered in tourist apartments of the Basque Country in September 2019 stood at 29,319, up 7.6% on those registered in September 2018, according to EUSTAT data. Overnight stays increased in the three provinces: in Gipuzkoa by 16.6%, in Álava by 5.4% and in Bizkaia by 1.4%.
There were 8,157 visitors registered in tourist apartments in the Basque Country in September 2019, which was a rise of 11.6% compared to the previous month. Visitor numbers were up 14.1% in Gipuzkoa, 12.5% in Bizkaia and 0.8% in Álava.
This September the average length of stay was 3.59 days, below the average length of stay of 3.73 days registered in September 2018. In Álava there was an increase from 7.64 days last year to 7.99 days in September of this year; in Bizkaia it was down from 2.84 days to 2.56 days; and in Gipuzkoa, the average length of stay increased from 3.71 days in September 2018 to 3.79 days in September 2019.
Tourist balance for September 2019
In hotels, rural accommodation and apartments as a whole, there were 344,399 visitors in September 2019, which was an increase of 6.1% compared to the same month of the previous year. 47.0% of the total number of visitors to the Basque Country was concentrated in Bizkaia, and total visitor numbers rose by 7.8%. In Gipuzkoa, which accumulated 40.1% of visitors to the Basque Country, there was an increase of 6.9% and in Álava, with 12.9% of visitors; there was a fall of 2.2%.
Overnight stays in the total number of tourist establishments were up 4.2%. In Gipuzkoa and in Bizkaia overnight stays increased by 5.1% and 5.3%, respectively, but in Álava they decreased by 1.8%.

In the accumulated total for the months of July, August, and September, 1,097,215 tourists were registered in hotels, rural accommodation, and apartments, an increase of 2.6% on the same period of the previous year. Bizkaia saw a 3.8% increase in visitor numbers compared to the same period of the previous year; in Gipuzkoa visitor numbers were also up, by 3.7%, however in Álava they were down 4.5%.
For its part, overnight stays registered a rise of 2.8% in the Basque Country overall in July, August and September 2019 compared to July, August and September 2018. In Gipuzkoa they were up by 4.3%, in Bizkaia they increased by 2.5%, but in Álava they were down 0.7%.
