Overnight stays in tourist apartments in the Basque Country were down 1.6% in August 2019
Tourist balance for July and August: Visitors were up by 1.1% and overnight stays by 2.3%
There were 44,323 overnight stays registered in tourist apartments in the Basque country in August 2019, which was a decrease of 1.6%, according to EUSTAT data. Overnight stays were down in the three provinces: in Álava by 3.8%, in Gipuzkoa by 1.1%, and in Bizkaia by 0.8%.
Moreover, the number of visitors registered in tourist apartments in the Basque Country in August 2019 reached 11,748, which was an increase of 5.4% on those registered in August of the previous year. Visitor numbers increased in the three provinces of the Basque Country: in Álava by 23.7%, in Gipuzkoa by 4.0% and in Bizkaia by 2.6%.
This August the average length of stay was 3.77 days, below the average length of stay of 4.04 days registered in August 2018. In Álava there was a decrease from 8.21 days last year to 6.39 days in August of this year; in Bizkaia there was a drop from 3.07 days to 2.97 days; and in Gipuzkoa, the average length of stay decreased from 4.19 days in August 2018 to 3.98 days in August 2019.

In hotels, rural accommodation and apartments as a whole, there were 392,319 visitors in August 2019, which was an increase of 0.9% compared to the same month of the previous year. 47.4% of the total number of visitors to the Basque Country was concentrated in Bizkaia, and total visitor numbers rose by 2.9%. In Gipuzkoa, which accumulated 38.5% of the total number of visitors, there was no significant variation (0%) compared to August 2018. However, in Álava, with 14.1% of visitors to the Basque Country, there was a decrease of 3.3%.
Overnight stays in the total number of tourist establishments were up 1.1%. In Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia the trend is positive, with an increase in overnight stays of 2.4% in the former, and 0.9% in the latter, but in Álava there was a downward trend with a decrease of 1.9%.

In hotels, rural accommodation and apartments as a whole in the Basque Country the balance of the two summer months of 2019, July and August, closed with the arrival of 752,816 visitors, 7,998 more than the previous year, an increase of 1.1%. By province, the largest growth was in Bizkaia, with 7,036 more visitors, an increase of 2.0%. The balance was also positive in Gipuzkoa, with 6,815 more visitors over the two months, up 2.3%. However in Álava, the number of visitors was down by 5,854, which was a drop of 5.4% in respect of July and August 2018.
The number of overnight stays stood at 1,711,590, which was 2.3% up on July and August 2018, with a total of 38,174 more overnight stays. There were 28,030 more overnight stays in Gipuzkoa, which was a rise of 4.0%. Bizkaia saw growth of 1.4%, with 10,689 more overnight stays, and in Álava there were 545 fewer overnight stays, a decrease of 0.2%.
