Overnight stays in tourist apartments in the Basque Country increased by 1.2% in July 2019
In hotels, rural accommodation and tourist apartments as a whole, there was a 3.7% increase in overnight stays in July
Overnight stays registered in tourist apartments of the Basque Country in July 2019 stood at 39,636, up 1.2% on those registered in July 2018, according to EUSTAT data. Overnight stays rose by 7.6% in Gipuzkoa and were down 3.9% in Bizkaia and 0.3% in Álava.
There were 10,944 visitors registered in tourist apartments in the Basque Country in July 2019, which was a rise of 2.5%. The number of visitors was up 10.9% in Bizkaia and 9.9% in Gipuzkoa whereas in Álava there was a drop of 32.2%.
This July the average length of stay was 3.62 days, below the average length of stay of 3.67 days registered in July 2019. In Álava there was an increase from 4.44 days last year to 6.53 days in July of this year; in Bizkaia it was down from 3.40 days to 2.94 days; and in Gipuzkoa, the average length of stay decreased from 3.60 days in July 2018 to 3.53 days in July 2019.
Tourist balance for July 2019: visitor numbers rose by 1.3%, Gipuzkoa stood out with an increase of 4.8%
In hotels, rural accommodation and apartments as a whole, there were 360,497 visitors in July 2019, which was an increase of 1.3% compared to the same month of the previous year. 46.5% of the total number of visitors to the Basque Country was concentrated in Bizkaia, and total visitor numbers rose by 1.1%. In Gipuzkoa, which accumulated 39.3% of visitors to the Basque Country, there was an increase of 4.8% and in Álava, with 14.3% of visitors; there was a fall of 7.8%.
Overnight stays in the total number of tourist establishments were up by 3.7%, with increases in all three provinces: 5.8% in Gipuzkoa, 2.1% in Bizkaia and 1.9% in Álava.
The balance for the two summer months of 2019, June and July, in the Basque Country closed with 683,125 visitors, 17,448 more than in the previous year, a rise of 2.6%. By province, the largest growth was in Gipuzkoa, with 19,337 more visitors, an increase of 7.4%. The balance is also positive in Bizkaia, with 3,631 more visitors over the two months, up 1.2%. However in Álava, the number of visitors has fallen by 5,520, which was a drop of 5.8% in respect of June and July 2018
The number of overnight stays stood at 1,445,065, 4.5% up on June and July 20182018, a total of 62,206 more overnight stays. There were increases in all three provinces, led by Gipuzkoa, with 46,758 more overnight stays (8%), followed by Bizkaia, with growth of 2.5%, 15,160 more overnight stays, and in Álava overnight stays rose by 288, up 0.2%.
