Overnight stays in tourist apartments in the Basque Country increased by 6.6% in May 2019

In hotels, rural accommodation and tourist apartments as a whole, there was a 4.0% increase in overnight stays in May

Overnight stays registered in tourist apartments of the Basque Country in May 2019 stood at 26,548, up 6.6% on those registered in May 2018, according to Eustat data.

Overnight stays rose by 22.0% in Bizkaia and by 1.3% in Álava, but they were down 4.9% in Gipuzkoa.

There were 7,523 visitors registered in tourist apartments in the Basque Country in May 2019, which was a rise of 7.3%. The number of visitors was up 30.5% in Bizkaia, but there was a drop of 3.4% in Gipuzkoa and 29.7% in Álava.

This May the average length of stay was 3.53 days, below the average length of stay of 3.55 days registered in May 2018. In Álava there was an increase from 5.49 days last year to 7.91 days in May of this year; in Bizkaia it was down from 2.82 days to 2.64 days; and in Gipuzkoa, the average length of stay fell from 3.51 days in May 2018 to 3.46 days in May 2019.

Tourist balance for May 2019: visitor numbers rose by 2.7% and overnight stays by 4.0%

In hotels, rural accommodation and apartments as a whole, there were 318,266 visitors in May 2019, which was an increase of 2.7% compared to the same month of the previous year. 47.2% of the total number of visitors to the Basque Country was concentrated in Bizkaia, and total visitor numbers rose by 4.4%. In Gipuzkoa, which accumulated 39.7% of visitors to the Basque Country, there was an increase of 4.2% and in Álava; with 13.1% of visitors; there was a fall of 6.8%.

Overnight stays in the total number of tourist establishments were up 4.0%. They increased by 5.9% in Gipuzkoa, 3.1% in Bizkaia and 1.1% in Álava.
