Overnight stays in tourist apartments in the Basque Country increased by 34.5% in January 2019
In hotels, rural accommodation and tourist apartments as a whole, there was a 6.4% increase in overnight stays in January
Overnight stays registered in tourist apartments of the Basque Country in January 2019 stood at 18,305, up 34.5% on those registered in January 2018, according to EUSTAT data.
There was a year-on-year upward trend in overnight stays in Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia, where they rose by 119.7% and 47.2%, respectively, but in Álava they were down 2.2%.
On the other hand, there were 3,228 visitors registered in tourist apartments in the Basque Country in January 2019, which was a rise of 15.8%. The number of visitors was up 27.6% in Bizkaia and 17.4% in Gipuzkoa, whereas there was a drop of 14.5% in Álava.
This January the average length of stay was 5.67 days, above the average length of stay of 4.88 days registered in January 2018. In Álava there was an increase from 11.93 days last year to 13.66 days this January; in Bizkaia there was a rise from 3.11 days to 3.59 days; and in Gipuzkoa, the average length of stay rose from 2.86 days in January 2018 to 5.35 days in January 2019.
Tourist balance for January 2019
In hotels, rural accommodation and apartments as a whole, there were 168,704 visitors in January 2019, which was a 2.4% increase compared to the same month of the previous year. 47.6% of the total number of visitors to the Basque Country was concentrated in Bizkaia, and total visitor numbers rose by 2.2%. In Gipuzkoa, which accumulated 38.7% of visitors to the Basque Country, there was an increase of 4.5% and in Álava, with 13.7% of visitors, there was a fall of 2.6%.
Overnight stays in the total number of tourist establishments were up by 6.4%, with increases in all three provinces. They were up by 9.8% in Gipuzkoa, 5.6% in Bizkaia and 1.0% in Álava.
