Overnight stays in tourist apartments in the Basque Country increased by 25.7% in September 2018

In hotels, rural accommodation and tourist apartments as a whole, there was a 7.5% increase in overnight stays during September

Overnight stays registered in tourist apartments of the Basque Country in September 2018 stood at 27,236, up 25.7% on those registered in September2017, according to EUSTAT data.

There was a year-on-year positive trend in overnight stays in in the three provinces: in Gipuzkoa they increased by 54.6%, in Álava they grew by 19.6% and in Bizkaia they were up by 11.5%.

Furthermore, there were 7,308 visitors registered in tourist apartments in the Basque Country in September 2018, which was a rise of 11.0%. By province, the number of visitors was up 27.1% in Gipuzkoa and 8.0% in Bizkaia, whereas there was a drop of 10.2% in Álava.

This September the average length of stay was 3.73 days, above the average length of stay of 3.29 days registered in September 2017. There were increases in Álava, up from 5.73 days last year to 7.64 days in September 2018, Bizkaia, up from 2.75 days to 2.84 days and in Gipuzkoa the average length of stay increased from 3.05 days in September 2017 to 3.71 days in September 2018.

Tourist balance for September 2018

In hotels, rural accommodation and apartments as a whole, there were 324,749 visitors in September 2018, which was an increase of 3.8% on the same month of the previous year. 46.2% of the total number of visitors to the Basque Country was concentrated in Bizkaia, and total visitor numbers rose by 1.9%. In Gipuzkoa, which accumulated 39.7% of visitors to the Basque Country, there was an increase of 8.4% and in Álava, with 14.1% of visitors, there was a fall of 2.3%.

Overnight stays in the total number of tourist establishments were up by 7.5%, with increases in all three provinces: 12.1% in Gipuzkoa, 6.3% in Álava and 3.8% in Bizkaia.
