LARGE STORES AND FOOD CHAINS TRADE INDEX OF THE BASQUE COUNTRY, AUGUST 2018
Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country fell by 2.5% in August 2018
The accumulated total for the first eight months of the year closed with 1.5% growth
Sales at large stores and food chains in the Basque Country in August 2018 experienced a year-on-year downturn at constant prices of 2.5% in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data. Compared to July, sales were down 0.5% in deseasonalised terms.
Sales of food products were down 3.1%, and sales corresponding to other items fell by 1.3%, with respect to the same month of the previous year.
Compared to the previous month, July 2018, food sales decreased by 0.7% and sales of other items remained stable (0.0%), at constant prices and in deseasonalised terms.
By province, Gipuzkoa saw an increase of 0.7% but in Álava there was a fall of 6.2% and in Bizkaia sales were down by 3.5%, in all cases over the year-on-year period.
The number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 4.1% compared to the same month of the previous year.
Balance for the first eight months of 2018
Sales at large stores and food chains in the Basque Country experienced a year-on-year upturn at constant prices of 1.5% in the accumulated total for the first eight months of 2018. This growth was distributed into sales of food products, which were up by 2.0%, and sales corresponding to other items, which increased by 0.7%.
The number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 3.2% in the first eight months of 2018.
