Overnight stays in tourist apartments in the Basque Country increased by 1.4% in April 2018
In hotels, rural accommodation and tourist apartments as a whole, there was a 1.3% decrease in overnight stays in April
Overnight stays registered in tourist apartments of the Basque Country in April 2018 stood at 22,967, up 1.4% on those registered in April 2017, according to EUSTAT data.
There was a year-on-year upward trend in overnight stays in Álava, where they rose by 25.9% and in Gipuzkoa, where they were up by 7.2%, but in Bizkaia they were down by 16.1%.
On the other hand, there were 5,736 visitors registered in tourist apartments in the Basque Country in April 2018, which is a fall of 23.4%. When interpreting these data, it should be taken into account that Easter of 2017 was in April and this year, except for Resurrection Sunday and Easter Monday, it fell in March.
By provinces, the number of visitors was up by 50.0% in Álava, whereas there was a drop of 33.3% in Bizkaia, and 29.2% in Gipuzkoa.
This April the average length of stay was 4.00 days, well above the average length of stay of 3.02 days that was registered in April 2017. In Álava there was a decrease from 7.32 days last year to 6.15 days in April of this year; in Bizkaia there was an increase from 2.56 days to 3.23 days; and finally in Gipuzkoa, the average length of stay rose from 2.52 days in April 2017 to 3.81 days in April 2018.
Tourist balance for April 2018
In hotels, rural accommodation and apartments as a whole, there were 275,981 visitors in April 2018, which was a decrease of 2.1% with respect to the same month of the previous year. 45.2% of the total number of visitors to the Basque Country was concentrated in Bizkaia, and total visitor numbers rose by 2.0%. In Gipuzkoa, which accumulated 40.6% of visitors to the Basque Country, there was a decrease of 1.6% and in Álava, with 14.2% of visitors, there was a fall of 3.7%.
Overnight stays in the total number of tourist establishments were up by 1.3%, with an increase of 0.5% in Bizkaia, but they were down 3.5% in Álava and 2.5% in Gipuzkoa
