In 80.5% of births the mothers were aged 30 or over
The largest group was women between 30 and 34 years old, who accounted for 38.3% of total births, even though the rate had fallen by slightly more than half a percentage point with respect to 2013. On the other hand, births continued to rise among mothers aged 35 to 39 (34.5%) and over 40 (7.8%). The number of babies to mothers aged 25 to 29 (13.6%) and 20 to 24 (4.6%) also increased, contrary to the trends over the last 5 years. Finally, teenage mothers made up 1.3% of the total and also saw a slight rise.

Bizkaia was the only province with a percentage higher than the Basque Country average, with 41.2%, whereas Álava and Gipuzkoa had lower relative values (39.7% and 38%, respectively). If we compare the current percentage with that registered in 2004 (22%), we see that over the last 10 years the proportion of births outside marriage has almost doubled.
