SERVICE STATISTICS. PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES AND AUXILIARY SERVICES 2013
The professional activities and auxiliary services sector employed 114,854 of those employed in the Basque Country in 2013, which is 11.9% of the total
Micro-enterprises (with less than 10 employees) constituted nearly 95% of the establishments in the sector
The professional activities and auxiliary services sector generated 8,051 million euros in 2013 and employed 114,854 people, which constituted 11.9% of the total number of jobs in the Basque economy according to data prepared by Eustat. The whole sector accounted for 27,939 establishments in 2013, which is a 0.2% increase compared to the previous year. However, this figure was 5.4% less than in 2012.
The Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities sub-sector, which encompasses Accounting and Legal Activity groups, Architectural and Engineering Services, Research and Development, Advertising and Market Research and Other Professional Activities, shows the highest amount of turnover with 65.7% of the total. It nearly employs the same number of people as the administrative activities and auxiliary services sub-sector. The sector experienced a 6.3% downturn in terms of turnover and a 1.7% downturn in employment. The Administrative Activities and Auxiliary Services sub-sector, which is made up of Rental Activity groups, Employment-related Activities, Travel Agencies and Other Service Activities and constitutes 34.3% of the total turnover, also experienced a downturn. The sub-sector's turnover fell by 3.8% and employment fell by 1.9%.
An analysis according to the size of establishments in the professional activities and auxiliary services sector revealed that micro-enterprises (with fewer than 10 employees) comprised 94.6% of establishments and generated 45.4% of total turnover with 37.7% of the employed personnel. Small companies (with 10 to 49 employees) represented 4.4% of establishments with 21.7% of employment, and 25.9% of the turnover. Finally, companies with 50 or more employees (medium and large companies) generated 28.6% of total turnover, provided employment to 40.7% of people in work and represented 1.1% of all establishments.
By province, for the sector as a whole in 2013, the three provinces experienced a downturn in terms of turnover and, with the exception of Álava, in terms of employment too. The Professional Activities and Auxiliary Services sector in Gipuzkoa, which generated 25.5% of the Basque Country's total turnover, saw a decline in sales by 7.7% in 2013 and a fall in employment by 2.2%. Bizkaia turned over 4.2% less than in 2012, which accounted for 61.6% of total sales, and saw a decline in staff of 2.1%. In Álava, employment remained fairly stable with an 0.3% increase. However, its turnover decreased by 6.8%, forming 12.9% of the total number of sales.
