Computing activities employed 13,000 people in 2012 and represented 1.25 billion euros in turnover in the Basque Country

Ancillary transport services turned over 2.778 billion euros and employed more than 10,500 people

The turnover of Computing activities in the Basque Country was nearly 1.25 billion euros and employed 13,000 people in 2012, according to data prepared by EUSTAT. This turnover was distributed by province as follows: Bizkaia contributed 67.8% of the total, Álava 16.2% and Gipuzkoa 16.0%.

Ancillary transport services, that include port, airport and other merchandise-related activities, turned over 2.778 billion euros in 2012. Bizkaia represented 56.2% of the turnover figure in this sector, followed by Gipuzkoa with 32.3% and Álava with 11.5%. This branch employed a total of 10,593 people, with a sales per person ratio of 262,228 euros.

Real Estate Activities, for their part, employed 5,186 people, with an average turnover of 130,615 euros per person. The distribution of turnover by province was 65.3% in Bizkaia, 24.4% in Gipuzkoa and 10.3% in Álava.

Cultural activities employed 6,002 people, and sport and recreational activities generated 7,343 jobs. Sales per person obtained within these branches reached 98,082 and 71,835 euros respectively. Bizkaia was the province with the greatest sales volume in both sectors: 58.1% in cultural activities and 50.7% in sport and recreational activities. Gipuzkoa and Álava turned over 31.3% and 10.6% of cultural activities and 34.2% and 15.1% of sport and recreational activities, respectively.

The branch of other personal services, whose main sub-sector is hairdressers and beauty salons, generated the lowest sales per person ratio of those analysed, at 35,519 euros. On the other hand, it generated a significant level of employment, with 12,688 jobs. More than half of the turnover was obtained in Bizkaia (56.1%), nearly a third in Gipuzkoa (32.7%) and the remaining 11.2% in Álava.

The average number of people employed per establishment was 3.4, ranging from averages of 1.5 and 1.7 for those related to Cultural Activities and Financial Auxiliaries, respectively, to 9.1 for those related to Ancillary Transport Activities. Establishments repairing computers and other items employed an average of 2.0 people, those related to cultural Activities, 2.9, Audiovisual, Cinema, Radio and Television Establishments, 4.9, and those related to Sport and Recreational Activities, 5.6. The remaining Activities employed more than six people on average (Editing 6.0, Postal and Courier Activities 6.3, and Computing 7.9).
