Expenditure on education in public education centres decreased by 7.8% between 2009 and 2012
Expenditure was 5,109 euros per pupil and 96,181 euros per unit
Expenditure on education in public education centres stood at 1.558 billion euros, falling 7.8% with respect to 2009, according to EUSTAT data. When expenditure on complementary activities and services and capital expenditure is added, the total expenditure came to 1.854 billion euros and accounted for 2.9% of GDP in 2012.
The largest part of the expenditure in public centres, 92%, was used to defray current activities, and the remaining 8% was spent on investments. For its part, 91.4% of the 1.705 billion euros in current expenditure went on education, 0.8% on additional activities and 7.8% on complementary services mainly focused on school meals and transport. Within the section dedicated to teaching, the most relevant chapter was that of personnel expenditure, which accounted for 89% of spending in this area.
According to education type, centres teaching pre-university level accounted for 72% of total expenditure, whilst university accounted for 24%, and specialised education centres the remaining 4%.
On the other hand, regarding education expenditure, the negative growth was greater per pupil (-13.9%) than per school unit (-8.9%).
Spending on education per school unit in public centres stood at 84,680 euros for infant education, whilst 79.251 euros were spent on primary education. In middle education, 120,404 euros were spent on Compulsory Secondary Education (E.S.O.), 169,658 euros on the Baccalaureate, and 160,019 and 136,346 euros were spent on Intermediate and Higher Grade Professional Training, respectively.
Expenditure on education per student stood at 5,335 euros for infant education, whilst for primary education this figure was 6,037 euros. With respect to middle education, this figure stood at 7,586 for E.S.O., 6,740 for Baccalaureate, and 10,226 and 7,770 euros were spent per student on Intermediate and Higher Grade Professional Training, respectively. In specialised education (languages, music, dance, arts and trades), 1,281 euros were spent per pupil, with this figure standing at 6,739 for university education.
The total income for public centres stood at 1.861 billion euros, with 94% corresponding to current income and 6% to capital income. The main components of current income were public subsidies, which accounted for 91.8% of the total. 7.3% of current income came from private sources, mainly through education fees (3%) and through additional activities and services (3.9%).
