Industrial activity in the Basque Country rose by 2.6% in April 2014
Compared to the previous month, the industrial production index of the Basque Country rose by 0.3%
Industrial production of the Basque Country in April 2014 was up by 2.6% compared to the same month of 2013, in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data. Compared to the previous month, March 2014, the industrial production of the Basque Country rose by 0.3%, once seasonal effects had been corrected.
The evolution of the index in April 2014 compared to April 2013 was positive for all of the main industrial groups, except for Consumer Goods, which fell by 3.0% as a whole, due to the fall in Consumer Durables, which were down by 15.2%, while Consumer Non-durables were up by 2.1%. Intermediate Goods rose by 3.4%, Equipment Goods were up by 2.8% and Energy increased by 2.1%.
The month-on-month variation in April 2014, compared to March 2014, also registered distinct changes for the main industrial groups. Capital Goods registered an decrease of 1.3% and Intermediate Goods fell by 1.1%. Energy rose by 1.2% and Consumer Goods as a whole rose by 2.9%, due to the fact that Consumer Durables were up by 3.6% and Consumer Non-durables, by 2.6%.
Among the largest sectors in Basque industry, those that saw the most significant growth in the month of April 2014 with regards to year-on-year variations were Transport Material, with an increase of 6.3%, and Machinery & Equipment which grew by 5.8%.
On the other hand, the sharpest falls occurred in the sectors Electrical Material & Equipment, which posted a year-on-year fall of 8.2%, and Timber, Paper and Graphic Arts, which decreased by 1.0%.
By province, the year-on-year evolution in April of the Industrial Production Index was up in Álava by 8.4% and in Gipuzkoa by 3.7%, but was down by 1.5% in Bizkaia. The month-on-month variation rate was also negative in Bizkaia, with an decrease of 1.1%, but positive in Álava, with an increase of 1.5%, and in Gipuzkoa where it rose by 1.0% with respect to March 2014.
