Industrial activity in the Basque Country fell by 1.8% in September 2013
Compared to the previous month, August 2013, the industrial production of the Basque Country fell by 0.3%
Industrial production of the Basque Country in September 2013 fell by 1.8% compared to the same month of 2012, in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data. Compared to the previous month, August 2013, the industrial production of the Basque Country fell by 0.3%, once seasonal effects had been corrected.
The evolution of the index for September 2013 compared to September 2012 revealed downturns for all of the large industrial sectors, with the exception of Energy, which rose by 0.4%. Equipment Goods were down by 4.3%, Intermediate Goods fell by 0.1%, and Consumer Goods as a whole were down by 2.7%, due to the decrease experienced both by Consumer Durables, which dropped 3.7%, and Consumer Non-Durables, which fell by 2.1%.
The month-on-month variation for September 2013, on August 2013, was positive for Equipment Goods, which registered an upturn of 0.7%, and Energy, which increased by 1.1%. Intermediate Goods posted a drop of 1.4% and Consumer Goods, as a whole, were down by 1.3%, due to the decrease experienced by Consumer Non-durables, which fell by 2.0%, with Consumer Durables rising by 0.3%.
Two of the largest sectors in Basque industry experienced growth in September 2013 with regards to the same month of the previous year: Timber, Paper and Graphic Arts which posted a positive rate of 3.5% andFood, Beverages & Tobacco Industries, with a rise of 0.2%.
On the other hand, particular mention should be made of the Electricity, Gas & Steam sector, with a negative rate of 6.8%, Electrical Material & Equipment, which posted a year-on-year fall of 6.3% and Metallurgy & Metal Products, which experienced a drop of 4.0%.
By province, the year-on-year performance of the Industrial Production Index for September was positive in Bizkaia, where it increased by 0.9%, whereas in Álava it was down by 5.0% and in Gipuzkoa there was a decrease of 2.8%. The month-on-month evolution was also positive in Bizkaia, where it grew by 1.4%, but in Álava it was down by 3.9% and in Gipuzkoa it dropped by 0.1% compared to August 2013.
