Industrial activity in the Basque Country fell by 6.4% in August 2013
Compared to the previous month, July 2013, the industrial production of the Basque Country grew by 0.5%
Industrial production of the Basque Country in August 2013 fell by 6.4% compared to the same month of 2012, in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data. Compared to the previous month, July 2013, the industrial production of the Basque Country rose by 0.5%, once seasonal effects had been corrected.
The evolution of the index for August 2013 compared to August 2012 revealed decreases for all major industrial sectors: Energy was down by 4.4%, Equipment Goods fell by 9.8%, Intermediate Goods dropped by 5.5% and Consumer Goods as a whole did so by 3.0%, due to the downturn experienced by Consumer Durables, which fell by 14%, and the 0.2% increase in Consumer Non-Durables.
The month-on-month variation in August 2013 on July 2013 was positive for Intermediate Goods, which posted a rise of 3.7%, and for Consumer Goods as a whole, which were up by 2.8%, as a result of the positive performance both of Consumer Non-durables, which rose by 2.9%, and Consumer Durables, which grew by 2.5%. Energy posted a downturn of 0.1% whilst Equipment Goods fell by 4.3%.
Two of the largest sectors in Basque industry experienced growth in August 2013 with regards to the same month of the previous year: Food, Beverages & Tobacco, which posted a positive rate of 6.1%, and Transport Material, with a rise of 2.4%.
On the other hand, Machinery & Equipment, with a negative rate of 13.1%, Wood, Paper & Graphic Arts, which decreased by 13.0% and Electrical Material & Equipment, which registered a year-on-year fall of 8.3%, all stood out.
By province, the year-on-year performance of the Industrial Production Index for August was negative in the three provinces: in Álava it was down by 0.7%, in Bizkaia it fell by 9.4% and in Gipuzkoa there was a decrease of 5.1%. Month-on-month performance, on the other hand, was positive both in Álava, where it grew by 2.4%, and Bizkaia, where it was up by 0.6%. In Gipuzkoa, however, it was down by 0.6% compared to July 2013.
