Industrial activity in the Basque Country fell by 3.5% in June 2013
Compared to the previous month, May 2013, the industrial production of the Basque Country grew by 0.6%.
Industrial production of the Basque Country in June 2013 fell 3.5% compared to the same month of 2012, in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data. Compared to the previous month, May 2013, the industrial production of the Basque Country rose by 0.6%, once seasonal effects had been corrected.
By sector, and using the classification of the major industrial sectors, the evolution of the index for June 2013 compared to June 2012 showed noticeable differences. Energy was down by 0.8%, Intermediate Goods fell by 3.4%, Equipment Goods were down by 1.8% and production of Consumer Goods as a whole fell by 5.9% due to the drops experienced both by Consumer Durables, which were down by 8.0%, and Consumer Non-Durables, which fell by 5.1%.
The month-on-month variation in June 2013, compared to May 2013, was only negative for Energy, which was down by 3.2%, whilst Intermediate Goods rose by 2.0%, Equipment Goods were up by 0.9% and Consumer Goods as a whole registered an increase of 4.7%, as a consequence of a positive evolution both for Consumer Durables, which rose by 1.7%, and Consumer Non-Durables, up 5.9%.
Three of the largest sectors in Basque industry experienced growth in June 2013 with regards to the same month of the previous year: Machinery & Equipment, with a rise of 2.0%, Plastic & Rubberwhich increased by 1.6% and Transport Material, which registered a positive rate of 0.5%.
On the other hand, Electrical Material & Equipment, with a negative rate of 11.2%, Wood, Paper & Graphic Arts, which decreased by 5.8% and Metallurgy & Metal Products, which registered a year-on-year fall of 5.3%, all stood out.
By province, the year-on-year evolution for June of the Industrial Production Index was negative in the three provinces, especially in Bizkaia where it was down by 6.9%; in Álava there was a drop of 1.8% and in Gipuzkoa the downturn was 0.9%. The month-on-month performance was positive in Gipuzkoa, where it increased by 3.1% and in Álava, where it was up by 1.9%, while it fell in Bizkaia by 2.6% compared to May 2013.
