INDUSTRIAL STATISTICS OF THE BASQUE COUNTRY 2011

The turnover figure for Basque industry grew by 9.8% in 2011

Personnel employed decreased by 2.5%

The net turnover figure for the industrial sector of the Basque country registered nominal growth of 9.8% in 2011, according to data provided by Eustat. With this growth, in 2011 the industrial sector confirmed the recuperation initiated a year before, although sales figures remained lower than the period before the crisis.

The number of employed individuals stood at 213,405, which was a decline of 2.5% compared to the previous year and a loss of 5,400 jobs.

For its part, Added Value at factor cost grew by 1.5% and the Gross Operating Surplus was up by 3% which, together with the fall in depreciations, caused the Net Surplus to rise by 8.4%. Personnel costs practically remained the same, up 0.6%. The result of the financial year stood at 2,007 million euros, with a drop of 8.2% with regards to 2010.

The manufacturing industry, which excludes theExtraction Industries, Water Supply & Sanitation and Electricity, Gas & Steam sectors, had a turnover of 50,974.6 million euros in 2011, also with 9.8% growth compared to 2010.

By sector, the branches with the heaviest weight in the total turnover figure for the industrial sector in 2011 were Metallurgy & Metal Products, (26.0%), Coke Plants & Oil Refining (11.9%), Electricity, Gas & Steam (11.1%) and Transport Material (10.2%). On the other hand, the branches of Metallurgy & Metal Products, Plastics & Rubber and Machinery & Equipment were those that employed the highest number of individuals in 2011, with 33.9%, 10.2% and 10.0% of the total, respectively.

Regarding evolution by sector, the branches with the highest growth in sales were Pharmaceutical Products, with growth of 48.6%, and Coke Plants & Oil Refining up 29.4%. In third and fourth place were Machinery & Equipment andTextile, Garments, Leather & Footwear with increases of 15.2% and 12.7%, respectively.

In contrast, only three activity branches posted falls in turnover in 2011: the sectors ofExtraction Industries (-17.6%), Furniture & Other Manufacturing Industries (-7.6%) and Food Industry(-0,3%).

The loss of employment was practically the same across all sectors and it was only the sectors of Water Supply & Sanitation (10.2%), Computer & Electronic Products (0.9%) and Electricity, Gas & Steam (0.2%) that registered positive changes.

By province, the highest growth in turnover was produced in Álava with 16.0%, followed by Bizkaia, with an increase of 12.2% and Gipuzkoa, which also posted a positive change, lower than the other two provinces, of 2.6%. The evolution in employment was negative in the three provinces: it was down by 1.8% in Álava, 1.9% in Gipuzkoa and by 3.3% in Bizkaia.

Regarding thedestination of sales, 30.3% of manufacturing industry sales were in the Basque Country and 30.8% in the rest of Spain. The remainder went abroad, with 23.6% destined for the European Union and 15.3% for the Rest of the World.
