The turnover of the construction sector in the Basque Country fell by 13% in 2011

Personnel employed decreased by 9.9%

The construction sector kept falling in 2011 with new drops in the net turnover figure of 13% and in personnel employed of 9.9%, which started in 2009. The decrease in the personnel employed stood at 8,487 jobs lost compared to the previous year.

Other remarkable aspects were:

• The drop in added Value at factor cost stood at 8.0%, and Personnel Costs fell by 8.3%.

• The Gross Operating Surplus fell by 7.6% which, together with a more moderate fall in depreciations, caused the net operating surplus to fall by 1.5%.

• However, Results before taxes increased by 72.4% and the Result of the financial year for was up by 59.7%, mainly due to the improvement in the balance between other income sources and exceptional expenditure, which, in spite of being negative in 2011, was less negative than during the previous financial year.

• Investment during the year 2011 dropped by 41%.

At a territorial level, the general behaviour was repeated, with general falls in employment and added value, in a similar magnitude to that which occurred in the Basque Country, with the province of Álava presenting a greater downturn, 12.5% in personnel employed and 11.8% in gross added value at factor costs.

Concerning sales distribution according to the end-use of the built property, 77% of the turnover in the construction sector came from the building subsector in 2011 and the remaining 23% resulted from civil works.

38% of the construction sector was dedicated to new residential works and 12% to the renovation of residential buildings. New civil works amounted to 17% of the sector.
