In 2012, 4,532 people died, of which 43 were over 100 years old.

Deaths increased by 3.8% in Álava, while in Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa they decreased slightly

In the second quarter of 2012 the figure for deaths in the Basque Country stood at 4,532, which was a rise of 0.3% compared to the same quarter of the previous year, according to Eustat data. By provinces, 571 people died in Álava, which was a rise of 3.8%. However, the number dropped slightly in Bizkaia, with 2,509 deaths, and in Gipuzkoa, with 1,452 deaths (-0.1% and -0.3%, respectively).

By sex, 50.5% of those who died were men and 49.5% were women. In all, more than half of the deaths (60.3%) corresponded to people over 80 years old, but the percentage rose to 72.7% with regards to women, and dropped 48.2% for men.

Amongst the deaths that occurred in the second quarter of 2012, 14 corresponded to children under the age of one, 7 boys and 7 girls. In relation to the 43 people who died at age 100 or more, 36 were women and only 7 were men.

The main cause of death was due to tumours: 1,412 people died for this reason (31.2%). Following this, as the second cause of death, were diseases of the circulatory system, which accounted for 1,257 deaths (27.7%). The third main cause of death was respiratory disease, which caused 393 mortalities over the last few months (8.7%).

As in previous quarters, the cause of deaths differed according to sex: amongst men, tumours caused more deaths than diseases of the circulatory system, whilst amongst women the main cause of death was cardiovascular disease, followed by tumours. Diseases of the respiratory system remained the third cause of death for both sexes.

Population growth was positive in the spring of 2012, with a rise in the population of 718 people in the Basque Country. The balance in the three territories was positive: 284 inhabitants in Álava,172 in Bizkaia and 262 in Gipuzkoa.
