Between 2000 and 2010 the number of buildings in the Basque Country grew by 18.2%
The highest increase was produced in Álava, with 33.6%, followed by Bizkaia with 16.5% and Gipuzkoa with 11.3%
Between 2000 and 2010 the buildings census in the Basque Country increased by 18.2% (by 31,121 units), as a balance between new buildings and those in ruins, with Álava being the province that saw the greatest increase (33.6%), followed by Bizkaia, which grew by 6.5%, and finally Gipuzkoa, with an increase of 11.3%, according to the Buildings and Premises Census carried out by Eustat.
Out of the total of 202,175 identified buildings, excluding those intended exclusively for agricultural production, a little over one thousand were in ruins (0.5%) and 1583 under construction (0.8%), whilst almost all buildings, specifically 199,548, were in normal conditions.
The six regions in Álava headed the growth ranking, with la Montaña Alavesa standing at 52.9% , Valles Alaveses at 36.4% and Rioja Alavesa y Estribaciones del Gorbea standing at 33%.
In Bizkaia, the regions with the greatest increases were Encartaciones with 26%, Arratia-Nervión with 24.4%, Plentzia-Mungia, with 21.2% and Duranguesado, with 20.7%. With regards to the province of Gipuzkoa, Alto Deba, with 6.7% growth, and the regions of Bajo Deba, Donostialdea, Urola Costa and Bajo Bidasoa, with increases of between 8 and 11%, showed the smallest increases in the Basque Country overall.
The capital with the greatest increase in buildings was Vitoria-Gasteiz (28.4%)
Vitoria-Gasteiz is the capital that recorded the highest growth, with 28.4% (3016 more buildings), followed by Donostia-San Sebastián, with 6.6% (719 more), and Bilbao, with 4.5% (507). In turn, the large Basque municipalities to complete the list with more than 3500 buildings were Getxo, with a 19% increase (812 more buildings), Irun, with 8.9% (409 more buildings), and Barakaldo, with 3.7% (131 more buildings).
Two out of every three buildings were destined exclusively for housing, 12.3% for premises and 22.3% combined both uses
Álava turned out to be the province with the highest proportion of buildings destined solely for housing (72.1%), once those in a ruinous state and those that were under construction at the moment of gathering information had been excluded. Bizkaia, with 26.1%, was the province that had the greatest percentage of buildings that combined both uses and Gipuzkoa, with 14.9%, stood out in the use of buildings exclusively for premises.
Turning to the capitals of each province, Bilbao was characterised for having the greatest number of buildings destined for housing and premises simultaneously, 59.4%, followed by Vitoria-Gasteiz, with 38.5%, and Donostia-San Sebastián, with 31.1%.

Taking into account the number of storeys, more than two in three buildings (68.9%) had between 1 and 3 storeys, 29.6% between 4 and 9 and just 1.5% had 10 or more. In Álava, the number of buildings in the 1 to 3 storey strata was significantly distinct from the Basque Country as a whole, with 81.8% of buildings, whilst 17% had between 4 and 9 storeys and 1.2% had 10 or more.
As regards evolution, the type of building that has seen most growth in the Basque Country is that with 10 or more storeys, standing at 27.2%, or 3027 buildings. The increase was highest in Bizkaia, with 35.5%, followed by Álava, with 32.6%, and some way behind by Gipuzkoa, with 8.4%. In Álava the strata that saw the largest increase was that of 1 to 3 storeys, with 41.1% more, whilst in Gipuzkoa the highest increase was in buildings of between 4 and 9 storeys, up by 21.3%.
With 1111 buildings of 10 or more storeys, Bilbao had the highest figure in the Basque Country, representing 36.7% of existing buildings. Furthermore, in the ten year period of the inter-census period they grew by 42.4%. Vitoria-Gasteiz followed some way behind with a census of 559 and an increase of 33.1%. Donostia-San Sebastián had 397 buildings of 10 or more storeys and a slight increase of 3.9%. Barakaldo (with 183 buildings and an increase of 67.9%) and Basauri (with 116) were two more municipalities that had more than 100 high buildings.
15.8% of buildings in Gipuzkoa had sports areas in their vicinity, in Álava this percentage was 8.9% and for Bizkaia it stood at just 6.4%
61% of buildings in the Basque Country had green areas in their vicinity, 10% had sports facilities, 2.9% had swimming pools and three out of four had exterior parking.
The buildings in the province of Álava, with 79.8%, stood out in terms of exterior parking in relation to those in Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa, with 75.1% and 73%, respectively.
With regards to the capitals, five out of six buildings in Vitoria-Gasteiz (85%) had nearby green areas, followed by 76.8% of those in Donostia-San Sebastián and, some way behind, 41.3% of those in Bilbao. However, buildings in Donostia-San Sebastián were nearer, in a greater proportion, to sports facilities, 30%, followed by Vitoria-Gasteiz, with 20.6%, and by Bilbao, with 6.6%.
