19% of those who died were over 90 years of age

In the third quarter of 2011 the figure for deaths in the Basque Country stood at 4342, which was a rise of 4% compared to the same quarter of the previous year, according to Eustat data. As far as the sex of the people who died was concerned, 2142 (49.3%) were women and 2200 (50.7%) were men. By province, in Álava there were 569 deaths, in Bizkaia there were 2398 and in Gipuzkoa 1375 people died.

If we consider the age at the time of death, 20% of the people who died were under 70 years of age, 21% were between 70 and 80 and 40% between 80 and 90 years of age. The remaining 19% was accounted for by the deaths of 819 people over 90 years of age, amongst which 3 out of every 4 were women.

The main cause of death was due to tumours: 1479 people died for this reason (34%). Following this, as the second cause of death, were diseases of the circulatory system, which accounted for 1182 deaths (27%). The third main cause of death was respiratory disease, which caused 341 mortalities over the last few months (8%).

The cause of death continues to vary according to sex: amongst men, tumours caused more deaths than diseases of the circulatory system, whilst amongst women, the main cause of death was cardiovascular disease, followed by tumours. Diseases of the respiratory system remained the third cause of death for both sexes.

Amongst the deaths that occurred in the third quarter of 2011, 12 corresponded to children under the age of one, 4 boys and 8 girls.

The rate of natural increase in the third quarter of 2011 was positive, with a rise in the population of 947 people. There were positive balances in the three provinces: The population of Gipuzkoa increased by 367 inhabitants, Álava by 316 and Bizkaia by 264.
