Press release dated 24/06/2011
The number of deaths increased by 0.9% in the fourth quarter of 2010
In 2010, 156 people (25 men and 131 women) were 100 years old or over when they died
In the fourth quarter of 2010, 4,929 people died in the Basque Country, 0.9% upon the same period of 2009, according to Eustat data. By provinces, there were 632 deaths in Álava, 2,750 in Bizkaia and 1,457 in Gipuzkoa.
The provisional figures for the total number of deaths in 2010 stood at 18,608, of which 9,595 were men and 9,013 women.
31.2% (5,811) of the deaths in 2010 were due to tumours. These were followed by deaths caused by circulatory system diseases (29.3% - 5,449 deaths) and, in third place and some way behind, respiratory diseases, which accounted for 8.4% (1,568).
The cause of death differed according to sex, since tumours outnumbered circulatory system diseases among men by practically 11 points, whereas the main cause among women was cardiovascular diseases, followed by tumours.
Fifty-four of all the deaths in 2010 were infants under one, 28 of whom were boys and 26 girls. On the other hand, 156 people (131 women and 25 men) were 100 years old or over when they died. The increase in the number of women aged 100 and over when they died is clear, given that there were only 50 fifteen years ago.
The population growth rate was positive in the three provinces
According to the provisional data for 2010, the population growth rate of the Basque Country was clearly positive, as births exceeded deaths by 2,346 people. Even though the sign was positive in the three provinces, the volume was higher in Álava and Gipuzkoa with population growth rate of 1,010 and 1,135 people, respectively, while it stood at 201 in Bizkaia.
