Retail trade sector sales fell by 1.4% in the Basque Country in the third quarter of 2010
Sales, not including service stations, were down by 2.3%
The retail trade sector of the Basque Country saw its nominal sales drop by 1.4% in the third quarter of 2010 compared to the same period of the previous year, according to Eustat data.
Sales in the sector, not including service stations, were down by 2.3% with respect to the previous year.
Compared to the previous quarter, the sales index fell by a nominal 0.9%, once any seasonal effects had been eliminated.
By sectors, specialised retail nominal sales fell by 1.5% in the third quarter of 2010, while non-specialised retail sales fell by 1.7% with respect to the same period of 2009.
The performance of the Food sector was particularly noteworthy within specialised retail trade as it posted nominal growth of 0.5%. Sales of Household Equipment products fell by 2.9%, the Personal Equipment sector saw its sales drop by 1.2% and sales of Other Consumer Goods were down by 0.1%.
By Provinces, the greatest downturn in retail sector nominal sales, in the third quarter of 2010, was in Gipuzkoa, with a 2.0% year-on-year decrease. Bizkaia decreased its nominal sales by 1.3% and Álava by 0.6%.
In constant prices, that is, without the price effect, retail trade sales fell by 3.2% in the third quarter
Retail trade sales not including service stations fell by 2.6% with respect to the same quarter of the previous year.
In the third quarter of 2010, there was a 1.3% drop in real retail trade sales of the Basque Country, with respect to the second quarter of 2010, once adjusted for seasonal effects.
The real drop was 2.9% in the case of specialised and 2.7% for non-specialised retail trade with respect to the same quarter of 2009.
Year-on-year performance within specialised retail trade was negative in all sectors. The downturn was 6.5% in the Other Consumer Goods sector, sales of Food products fell by 1.4%, Household Equipment posted a decrease of 1.1% and Personal Equipment fell by 0.1%, all in real terms.
As far as non-specialised retail trade was concerned, year-on-year sales of food products fell by 2.2%, while those coming under Other Products were down by 5.8%, in constant euros.
The three provinces posted negative increases in real terms. Gipuzkoa was down by 3.9%, Álava by 3.5% and sales in Bizkaia dropped by 2.6% in real terms.
The number of people employed in the retail trade sector in the Basque Country overall in the third quarter of 2010 was down by 0.7% on the previous quarter.
