INDUSTRIAL PRICE INDEX OF THE BASQUE COUNTRY (IPRI). AUGUST 2010

Industrial prices rose by 0.2% in the Basque Country in August 2010 compared to the previous month

They were 4.4% up on the previous year (August 2010 on August 2009)

Industrial prices in the Basque Country remained unchanged (0.2%) in August 2010 compared to the previous month, according to EUSTAT data. The year-on-year rate for August, which indicates the fluctuation in industrial prices over the last twelve months, therefore stood at 4.4%.

A more detailed sectorial analysis shows that the most inflationary branches in June 2010, with regard to the previous month were “Other Manufacturers” (1.1%), “”Metallurgy and Metal Articles” (0.5%), “Timber Industry” (0.4%) and “Food Industry” (0.3% ), among others. By contrast, the sectors whose prices fell most were “Metal and Non-Metal Minerals" (-1.3%), "Electrical Equipment" (-0.5%), “Non-Metal Industry” (-0.2%) and Machinery D 0-1.%).

Over the year-on-year period, August 2010 on August 2009, the highest price rises were recorded by the branches of “Oil By-Products” (12.6%) , “Electricity, Gas and Water" (6.9%), “Metallurgy and Metal Items” (6.6%) and “Other Manufacturers” (4.7%). On the other hand, the sectors that posted the greatest price drops were "Metal and Non-Metal Minerals" (-3.1%), "Timber Industry" D 0.3%) and “Machinery" (0.1%).

Following the classification of Goods by economic destination, the August price evolution of large sectorial groups was as follows. the prices of Intermediary Goods rose by 0.4%, Capital Goods by 0.1% and Consumer Goods overall by 0.2%, as a result of the rise registered both by the prices of Consumer Non-Durables (0.2%) and Consumer Durables (0.1%) On the other hand, Energy prices remained unchanged (0.0%).

The price evolution of these large groups of goods reveals differences over the year-on-year period. Energy prices increased by 9.9%, Intermediary Goods by 5.6%, Capital Goods were up 0.6% and Consumer Goods registered a 0.7% increase. Among the latter, the prices of Consumer Durables fell by 0.3% while Consumer Non- Durables were up by 1.1%.
