Industrial activity in the Basque Country fell by 4.8% in January 2010
Compared to the previous month, December 2009, industrial production in the Basque Country fell by 2.3%
Industrial production in the Basque Country fell by 4.8% in January 2010 compared to the same month of 2009 in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to EUSTAT data.
Compared to the previous month, December 2009, industrial production in the Basque Country fell by 2.3%, once seasonal effects had been corrected.
By sector, and using the major industrial sector classification, the evolution of the index for January 2010 compared to January 2009 showed decreases in all sectors: Capital Goods fell by 10.1%, Intermediate Goods by 2.4% and Energy was down by 5.3%. Consumer Goods were down by 3.6%, as the result of the decrease in Consumer Non-Durables (-2.0%) and, particularly, of the drop in Consumer Durables (-8.8%).
Month-on-month fluctuations in January 2010, compared to December 2009, were also negative in the main industrial sectors: Energy dropped by 8.6%, Intermediary Goods by 1.4%, Capital Goods were down by 1.3% and Consumer Goods by 1.1%, as a result of the drop registered by Non-durables (-2.6%), as Durables rose by 4.5%.
By province, the January year-on-year performance for the Industrial Production Index was positive in Álava, up 0.3%, while it fell by 4.1% in Bizkaia and by 8.1% in Gipuzkoa. The month-on-month rate was negative in Álava, down by 5.7%, and in Gipuzkoa, where it fell by 3.0%, but remained practically unchanged in Bizkaia (0.0%).
