Rise in the number of deaths in the second quarter of 2009

4,430 people died in April, May and June 2009, 52.8% of whom were men and 47.2% women

The 4,430 deaths in the second quarter of 2009 was up 2% on the same period of the previous year, according to Eustat data. By provinces, 540 people died in Álava, 2509 in Bizkaia and 1,381 in Gipuzkoa.

Tumours were the main cause of death: 1,394 people died for this reason (31.5%), followed by circulatory system diseases as the second cause of death, which lead to 1,283 people dying (29%). Respiratory diseases were in third place and caused 358 deaths (8.1%) in the months in question.

The cause of death differed according to sex, as tumours outnumbered circulatory system diseases among men, whereas the main cause was cardiovascular diseases among women, followed by tumours. Respiratory diseases remained as the third cause of death for both sexes.

Eight of all the deaths in the second quarter of 2009 were infants under one, 4 of whom were boys and 4 girls.

The population growth rate in the second quarter of 2009 was positive, with a population increase of 917 people. There were positive balances in the three provinces: Álava increased its population by 304 inhabitants, Bizkaia by 141 and Gipuzkoa by 472.
