Number of visitors rose by 4% in November 2009

Overnight stays increased by 3% in November

There were 154,757 visitors registered in the hotel establishments of the Basque Country in November 2009, 6,500 up on the same month of the previous year, in other words a 4% increase, according to Eustat data. This growth was noted in the three provinces: the number of visitors increased by 13% in Álava, by 4% in Gipuzkoa, while it was up by 2% in Bizkaia with respect to November of the previous year.

The number of visitors from within Spain was up by 4%, while the number of overseas visitors increased by 5% compared to the same month of the previous year. Visitors from within Spain were up by an equal percentage as that for the total travellers, that is, the number was up by 13% in Álava, 4% in Gipuzkoa and 2% in Bizkaia. The number of overseas visitors also increased in the three provinces: they were up by 12% in Álava, 5% in Bizkaia and 2% in Gipuzkoa.

The greatest increase of Spanish visitors was mainly among those from Catalonia, Asturias, La Rioja and Madrid, and those from Andalusia, Castilla-La Mancha and Extremadura notably dropped. As far as foreign visitors were concerned, there was mainly an increase in the number from France, the United Kingdom, Portugal, Germany and Finland, while the number from Italy, the rest of Europe and Latin America decreased.

Registered overnight stays in November 2009 totalled 281,894, which was 3% up on the same month of the previous year, in other words, there were 8,000 more overnight stays. The year-on-year evolution of overnight stays was positive in Álava and Gipuzkoa, up by 8% and 5%, respectively, but remained unchanged in Bizkaia (0%).

The average length of stay was down from 1.85 days in November of the previous year to 1.82 in November 2008 for the Basque Country as a whole. It fell by 5% in Álava and 2% in Bizkaia, but increased by 1% in Gipuzkoa. Thus, the average stay in Álava in November 2009 was 1.72 days, 1.76 days in Bizkaia, while it stood at 1.95 days in Gipuzkoa.

The occupancy rate by bed was down by 2%, falling from 38.39% last November to 37.72% this November for the Basque Country as a whole. It fell by 1% in Álava, down to a 45.4% occupancy rate, Bizkaia was down by 4% to an occupancy rate of 38.05% and the rate in Gipuzkoa increased by 1% and had the highest occupancy rate by bed at 38.51%. The occupancy rate by rooms also fell (4%) for the Basque Country as a whole.

RURAL TOURISM

The number of visitors and overnight stays fell by -9% and -5% respectively.

The number of visitors in rural tourism establishments of the Basque Country totalled 6,935 in November, which was down by 9% with respect to the same month of the previous year. However, the performance of the three provinces was not uniform. The number of visitors increased by 3% in Álava and fell by 7% in Gipuzkoa and by 20% in Bizkaia. The number of visitors from within Spain was down by 9% on the figure for November of the previous year and those from abroad also fell in number by 19% for the Autonomous Community as a whole. The number from visitors within Spain was up by 1% in Álava and the foreigners by 107%, even though their relative weight was very small. Visitors from within Spain were down by 18% in Bizkaia and the foreigners fell by 45%. The number of Spanish visitors fell by 7% in Gipuzkoa, but the number of foreigners was down by 11%.

There were 17,037 overnight stays in rural tourism establishments in the Basque Country in November, 900 fewer than in the same month of the previous year (-5%), with year-on-year positive growth being recorded in Álava (9%), but negative in Bizkaia (-2%) and Gipuzkoa(-7%).

The average length of stay per visitor in the Basque Country overall decreased with respect to November 2008, falling from 2.34 days a year ago to 2.46 days in the same month of 2008 The average stay rose in Álava and Bizkaia and did not vary significantly in Gipuzkoa.

The occupancy rate by bed was 15.26%, which was the down by 11% on the same period of the previous year. This figure fell in the three provinces: by 5% in Álava, 12% in Gipuzkoa and 14% in Bizkaia. The occupancy rate by rooms fell by 15% in the Basque Country as a whole.
