POPULATION AND HOUSING CENSUS. Mobility due to work or studies. YEAR 2001

Over 440,000 persons in the A.C. of the Basque Country travel to work daily to another municipality

A million men and women go out to work or to an education centre

According to the results of the Population and Housing Census 2001 published by the Eustat, corresponding to the section Mobility due to work or studies, 443,093 persons in the A. C. of the Basque Country are obliged to commute daily from their home municipality for work reasons.

Four in five persons, 82%, who commute from municipalities and are resident in the A. C. of the Basque Country, move within the area of the three provinces. In addition, 13%, over 59,000 persons, work in several municipalities in the community (transport workers, deliverers, reps, etc.). The percentage of those who move to other communities comes to 3.6%, 15,817, and opt for places such as Navarre, Madrid, Burgos, Santander and La Rioja in that order. Only 3,036 persons, less than 0.7% work abroad, European Union countries being the preferred destination, with over 2,159 commuters. The USA occupies second place, with 304 persons on the move.

54% of students aged over 15, about 100,000, study outside their home municipality.

100,625 students aged over 15 years, 54%, leave their home towns for academic reasons.

Most of them, 90,000, study in the A. C. of the Basque Country, while 7,536, 7.6%, take up studies in other Spanish provinces. The most popular are Navarre, Madrid, Barcelona and Zaragoza. Only 1,673, 1.6 %, study abroad, opting for Great Britain, France, Ireland and the USA, the most popular destinations.

This data is part of a wider group, composed of 1,048,727 persons that each day leave home to head for their work place or place of study.

Less than 1 in 5 persons that need to move within their municipality for work reasons use public transport

Of those who commute within their own municipality, 44% opt mostly for a private vehicle, either as the driver or as a passenger. The people who commute on foot represent 35% and only 17% use public transport. The number of people who choose to travel by motorbike or bicycle amounts to only 2%.

80% of intra-municipal commuters take less than 20 minutes and 52% of the people affected make more than one return trip daily; 48% of the rest move in a sole trip, also return, of course.

Among those who commute to municipalities other than that of residence due to work, the car is the most common means of transport: 72% resort to this means, either as the driver or passenger. The use of public transport registered a lower percentage - 23%. Less than 1% commutes by motorbike or bicycle. The average length of the trip is over 30 minutes in 30% of cases; between 20 and 30 minutes for another 30% and less than 20 minutes for 38%.

To get to work, only 1 in 3 Bizkaians uses their own vehicle, compared with nearly half the commuters in Álava and Gipuzkoa

With regard to the differences by province, 56% of the employed population in Álava go to work in their own vehicle, as the driver or passenger, falling to 47% in Gipuzkoa and in Bizkaia the figure falls considerably to 33%. In the same way, it is relevant that in Álava 27% of the population walk to work compared to 35% in Gipuzkoa and a higher percentage of 40% in Bizkaia.

If mobility is limited to inter-municipal for work, it should be pointed out that in the three provinces the private vehicle predominates: 76% in Álava opt for this means, 77% in Gipuzkoa el 77%, and in Bizkaia, given the higher offer of public transport, the figure falls to 68% of the total.

1 in 5 students uses a motorcar to get to another municipality to study

In the case of mobility among youths aged 16 and over studying in their municipality of residence, 49.2% walk, compared to 11.4% who use a private car. Slightly less than 4% choose to travel by motorbike or bicycle. Public transport is the preferred option for 35%. Most of those who change municipalities to study also use this means, 67%; the presence of the private vehicle falls to 19% and the motorbike to a symbolic 1%.

Vitoria-Gasteiz receives 11,934 persons daily and 8,841 set off from the Alaves capital to reach their work place.

The capital of Bizkaia, Bilbao, receives 61,572 persons daily, compared to 42,051 that move outside the city in order to get to work.

In Gipuzkoa, 52.3% own one vehicle, 17.4% own two and 3.6% have more than two.
