136,231 visitors were registered in hotel establishments in the A.C. of the Basque Country in June 2002, almost 10,000 more than in the same month the year before, which represents a 7% increase, according to Eustat data. Entries by visitors increased in all three provinces, though to differing extents. There was an 11% increase in Alava and 6% in Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa.
Entries by state visitors increased 10%, higher than the increase in the number of foreign visitors (2%). State visitors increased in number in all three provinces: 8% in Alava, 15% in Bizkaia and 5% in Gipuzkoa; on the other hand, foreign visitors increased by 18% in Alava and 8% in Gipuzkoa, while in Bizkaia there was a 10% reduction.
Among the state visitors there were increases in numbers from almost all autonomous communities, especially from the Communities of Madrid and Valencia, as well as from the A.C. of the Basque Country itself and Navarre. Among the foreign visitors there were significant increases in visitors from France and the UK, while at the same time there was an important fall in the number of visitors from the USA-Canada and South America.
Overnight stays registered in June 2002 came to 255,237, i.e. almost 18,000 more than the same month the year before, which represents a 7% increase in percentage terms. The number of overnight stays increased by 11% in Bizkaia and 5% in Alava and Gipuzkoa.
The length of the average stay for visitors staying at hotels
in the A.C. of the Basque Country remained stable in June 2002, this index being
1.87 days per visitor. The average stay rose 5% in Bizkaia and fell 5% and 1%
in Alava and Gipuzkoa, respectively.
The level of occupancy by places rose 2% for the whole of the A.C. of the Basque Country, as a result of the 5% increase experienced in Bizkaia and the 2% rise in Alava, while in Gipuzkoa there was a 1% fall. The level of occupancy by rooms also grew 2% for the A.C. of the Basque Country due to the increases in Alava and Bizkaia (7% and 3%, respectively), while in Gipuzkoa the level of occupancy by rooms fell 2% during June 2002 with regard to the same month the year before.
6,463 entries were registered by visitors to Agrotourism establishments in the A.C. of the Basque Country in June 2002, 12% more than the year before, a 25% increase in Gipuzkoa, 5% in Bizkaia and a 2% decrease in Alava.
Overnight stays came to 14,982, 26% higher than in June 2001, affecting the three provinces in the A.C. of the Basque Country: Gipuzkoa (30%), Alava (26%) and Bizkaia (22%).
The average stay rose 13% for the whole of the A.C. of the Basque Country , increasing in all three provinces: Alava (29%), Bizkaia (16%) and Gipuzkoa (4%) with regard to the same month the previous year.
