SURVEY ON TOURIST ESTABLISHMENTS (EETR) December 2002
9% INCREASE IN VISITORS IN DECEMBER 2002
Over the whole of 2002 entries by visitors increased 9% and
overnightstyas rose 8% with regard to the previous year.
Hotel establishments in the A.C. of the Basque Country registered
97,366 entries by visitors in December 2002, 7,500 entries more than in the
same month the previous year, which represents a 9% increase according to Eustat
data. Entries by visitors increased 15% in Gipuzkoa and 7% in Bizkaia, while
remaining practically the same in Alava.
Overnight stays registered in December 2002 came to 172,920,
i.e. 8,000 more than the same month the previous year, which represents a 5%
increase in terms of percentage. The number of overnight stays rose substantially
by 13% in Gipuzkoa, rising 1% in Bizkaia and falling 2% in the province of Alava.
The length of the average stay by visitors fell from 1.84 days
in December the previous year to 1.78 last December 2002.
Agrotourism: Increase in entries by visitors (12%) and overnight
stays (9%).
5,082 entries were registered by visitors in Agrotourism establishments
in the A.C. of the Basque Country in December 2002, 12% more than the previous
year, rising 25% in Alava, 16% in Gipuzkoa and 3% in Bizkaia.
The total number of overnight stays came to 12,592, 9% more
than in December 2001, this increase affecting the provinces of Alava (18%)
and Gipuzkoa (14%), as in the province of Bizkaia the figure remained stable.
The average stay fell 3%, this decrease affecting all three
provinces of the A.C. of the Basque Country.
DATA BALANCE 2002: POSITIVE RESULTS BOTH IN HOTELS AND AGROTOURISM
ESTABLISHMENTS.
1,512,081 entries by visitors were registered in hotel establishments
in the A.C. of the Basque Country over the whole of 2002, i.e. 125,000 more
entries than the previous year, which represents an annual growth of 9%.
This increase was identical for state and foreign visitors. The annual growth
in the number of visitors came to 10% for Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia and 4% for the
province of Alava.

The number of overnight stays registered at hotel establishments during 2002 came to 2,847,751, i.e. 211,000 more than a year before, and therefore represent 8% annual growth, this being 12% in Bizkaia and 9% in Gipuzkoa, while in Alava there was a 2% decrease.
The average stay, however, registered a slight fall (-1%) over the year 2002, but the level of hotel occupancy improved by 3% with regard to 2001.
Agrotourism establishments in the A.C. of the Basque Country received 78,301 visitors, increasing the figures of the previous year by 17%.
In relation to overnight stays, figures increased by 16% in agrotourism establishments for all three provinces of the A.C. of the Basque Country, the increase coming to 28,000 in absolute figures.
The level of occupancy reached by agrotourism establishments over the year 2002 increased by 7% with regard to the previous year.
