objective
life expectancy at birth provides the human development index with an indicator that not only considers "quantity of life" but also the quality, as it is associated to the population’s health and social care conditions. the population's general health, on the one hand, and also the differential mortality on the other, influence life expectancy results.

concepts and definitions
according to a mortality table, a person’s average number of years of life as at birth. it is also the average age of death on the table.
life expectancy has been estimated using the abbreviated table calculation according to the chiang method, with 5 year age intervals, except for children under 1 and from 1 to 4 years old.
- calculating the index
the life expectancy index measures a country’s relative achievement in terms of life expectancy at birth. in the case of brazil, with a life expectancy of 70.8 years in 2004, the life expectancy index is 0.764.
a maximum limit equal to 85 years and a minimum one of 25 are established.
