Objectives

It is an indicator of expenditure, which shows what proportion of a country's wealth (GDP) is spent on health, i.e. the total public and private spending on curative, rehabilitative and preventative health care services as well as on pharmaceutical products, in addition to the investment made by provider industries of these services and products.

The indicator is obtained as a quotient, out of a hundred:

Numerator:

Total health current expenditure: the total public and private spending on curative, rehabilitative and preventative health care services as well as on pharmaceutical products, in accordance with the SHA 1.0 (System of Health Accounts) methodology of the OECD.

Denominator:

GDP (Gross Domestic Product) x 100,000.
