Employment in the Autonomous, Regional and Local Administration in the Basque Country exceeded 127,000 individuals on 31 December 2015
This accounted for 13% of total employment, up by 2.3% from 2014
The Public Administrations in the Basque Country (not including personnel dependent on State Administration or on Social Security) had 127,007 public employees on 31 December 2015 according to EUSTAT data, 13% of the total number of individuals employed in the Basque Country.
Of these 127,007 public employees, 64.5% worked in the Administration of the Autonomous Community, 20% worked for Local Entities and 8% worked for Provincial Councils, with the the remaining 7.3% employed in the University, Foundations and other public entities.
Moreover, civil servants accounted for 64.4% of employed individuals, with administration personnel accounting for 23.3% of the total, and other staff accounting for 12.3%.
If we compare the number of individuals employed with previous years, we see an increase of 0.8% in the total number of individuals employed in the Basque Administrations between 2011 and 2015, which is identical to the increase experienced by the Provincial Councils, Local Entities and their corresponding dependent bodies as a whole, though the Basque Government and its bodies experienced a more moderate growth of 0.1%.
On 31 December 2015, 38.8% of all public employees were men, 61.2% women.
In terms of variation in employed people by gender, the increase in the number of women between 2011 and 2015 is particularly noteworthy at 2.0%, whereas the number of men fell by 1.0%.
Methodological note: The Directory of Public Administrations comprises the General Administration of the Basque Country, Provincial Councils and City Councils, together with the Autonomous Administrative Bodies, Public Entities and non-profit Foundations and Institutions that depend on these. All entities whose public stake is equal to or greater than 50% are included, whether it be held by a single administration or is a joint stake of various public administrations.
