E-commerce, in terms of the number of companies as well as sales figures, continued to grow in 2013 in the Basque Country

21.6% of Basque companies carried out e-commerce, 1.9% more than in 2012

E-commerce in the Basque Country continued to grow, though more in terms of sales figures, in euros, than of the percentage of participating companies, according to data prepared by Eustat. Thus, 21.6% of companies carried out e-commerce in 2013, 1.9 percentage points more than in the previous year. The volume of business generated over the Internet or via other electronic systems such as email and electronic data interchange (EDI), etc. stood at 11,072.3 million euros in terms of electronic sales and 8,090.8 million in terms of purchases.

Compared to the year before, these figures show increases of 3.5% in e-commerce sales by companies in the Basque Country and 12.3% in those relating to purchases made using the same system.

By province, all three had a very similar figure for electronic sales, with Bizkaia representing the highest percentage with 35.8% of the Autonomous Region, while Álava (32.2%) and Gipuzkoa (32%) took a roughly equal share. In relation to purchases, however, Bizkaia accounted for 51% of the total in 2013, whereas Gipuzkoa represented 31.5%, and Álava kept 16.5% of the electronic purchases in the Basque Country overall.

Álava stood out for being the province where electronic purchases grew the most in 2013, by 23.3%, and it was also the only province where sales decreased, by 1.7%. Gipuzkoa, for its part, saw the largest growth in sales, 7.9%, and a significant growth in purchases, with 15.1%. As for Bizkaia, it retains the middle ground, growing by 7.6% in purchases and 4.6% in electronic sales.

If the size of the establishments is taken into account, the most money from e-commerce is exchanged in those with 10 or more employees, with 80.5% of total sales and 67.7% of total purchases, though the smaller companies, those with 10 employees or fewer, grew the most in the last year, especially in terms of purchases (25.3%).

Regarding the percentage of companies in the Basque Country that deal in e-commerce, these increased by 1.9 percentage points in 2013 and currently represent 21.6%. This proportion is mainly due to the companies that made purchases, 19.7% and to a lesser degree those that made sales, 5.2%.

It is also apparent that, even though the electronic sales figures greatly exceed those for purchases, the number of companies purchasing electronically (19.7%) greatly exceeds those that sell using the same method, which make up 5.2%.

The number of companies carrying out e-commerce in the Basque Country is calculated to be around 35,700. In these, it is estimated that purchases made via this method are 29.4% of their total purchases and sales are 35.9% of their total sales.

These figures vary if company size is taken into account. Thus, amongst those with 10 or more employees, 27.5% carried out e-commerce, 0.2 percentage points fewer with respect to the previous year. Also in this segment, the number of companies making electronic purchases was much higher, standing at 23.4%, whereas those making sales through the same channels were lower in number, 10.0%, following falls of 0.2 and 0.4 percentage points this year, respectively.

With regards to the means by which electronic purchases were made, 42.9% were done by email, 31.3% using websites and the remaining 25.8% by EDI and other networks. On the other hand, 48.0% of e-sales were made by EDI and other networks, 26.7% by email and 25.3% using websites.

With regards to the type of client to which e-commerce sales were destined in 2013, a large majority, 82.8% of the total e-sales, were destined for other companies (so-called B2B trade), 15.8% were for private consumers (B2C) and the remaining 1.4% was spread over other destinations, such as Public Administrations (B2G).
