BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES 1992
MALKA KANTOROWITZ
Malka Kantorowitz completed her B.Sc. in mathematics and physics in 1963; in 1964 she
completed her studies for B.Sc. in statistics; and in 1966 obtained her M.Sc. in statistics,
all at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
In 1961 she joined the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics and since 1970 she has
been the Director of the Statistical Methods Division. From 1988 she has also served as a Senior
Deputy Director at the Rescarch and Development Department. Her work has been primarlly in
fields of sampling and estimation methods, investigation procedures and evaluation studies for a
wide spectrum of the Bureau's surveys and censuses (household, agriculture, business, etc.).
Malka Kantorowitz has published several papers on various issues of survey
methodology and on evaluation studies.
She has taught courses in sampling methods, survey design methodology and evaluation
procedures at several Israeli universities, primarily at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Malka Kantorowitz is a founding member of the Israeli Statistical Association and
served as the Association's first general secretary. She was a member of the Council of the
International Association of Survey Statisticians (1983-1987) and is the country representative
of this Association.
HANS PETTERSSON
Hans Pettersson got his Masters degree in Statistics at the University of Umea
in 197 1. Later he made studies in Demography at the University of Stockholm and in 1988 he made
his Ph.D. studies in Statistics at the University of Stockholm as well.
He has published severas articles on the construction of a population health index.
Between 1969-1971 he has worked as a lecturer and research assistant at the University of Umea.
Between 1972-1975 he worked as statician in the Department for Statistics in the
Section for Research and Development at the Swedish Post Office. In 1975 he collaborated with
the Central Bureau of Statistics of Kenya, as a sampling statistician with the development of a
master sample of households. Up to 1980 he has worked at the Swedish Post Office.
Between 1980-1983 he has worked as a lecturer in Statistics at the Institute of
Development Management at Mzumbe, Tanzania.
From 1983 he is Senior statistician at the Department of Population and Social
Statistics at Statistics Sweden. He works mainly with quality projects, health statistics and
statistics on social welfare. Also he is got a part-time work in the International Consulting
Office within Statistics Sweden. He travels frequently to African and Asian countries in
short-term missions for work with sampling issues, health surveys and household budget surveys.
EDWIN DIDAY
Edwin Diday was awarded a doctorate by the University of Paris VI, Pierre and
Marie Curie in 1972. He has lectured in Data Analysis in Information Management and Decision
Mathematics at the University of Paris 9 Dauphine since 1974. Since then he has also been
leading a research team at the INRIA (National Institute of Information and Automation
Technology) whose current objective is concerned with data analysis, specifically, automatic
numeric and symbolic classification and memorisation.
He has participated in the setting up of the Modulad club which produced the
MODULAD software (Standardised modular library of data analysis programmes). He is a member of
the Editorial Board of three international magazines; has had some fifty articles published
along with various books. He regularly organises (every two years) an International Congress of
Data Analysis. He was President of the IFCS’93, International Symposium of the Federation of
Classification Societies which was held in Paris in September’93. He was awarded the Montyon
award by the Academy of Sciences.
