MARRIAGE STATISTICS. II/2025
There were 2,170 marriages in the Basque Country in the second quarter of 2025, down 10.1% on the previous year
The cumulative decrease for the year stood at 1.5%
The number of marriages in the Basque Country during the second quarter of 2025 was 2,170, 10.1% down on those in the same quarter of the previous year (2,413 weddings), according to Eustat data.
As usual, in the second quarter, the number of unions rose considerably compared to the first quarter (+72.2%). Furthermore, 44.9% of the weddings celebrated in this quarter took place in June.
Taking into account the province where the marriage was registered, all three provinces saw a decrease in the number of marriages. Bizkaia, with 1,024 weddings, registered a drop of 10.9%; Gipuzkoa, with 705 weddings, saw a fall of 7.5%; and Álava, with 327 weddings, recorded a decrease of 5.8%. Meanwhile, 114 marriages were registered outside the Basque Country.
During the spring months of 2025, the percentage of civil weddings was 92.6%, which is 0.3 percentage points higher than in the same quarter of 2024.
Of the 2,170 weddings in the second quarter of 2025, 2,076 men and 2,104 women resident in the Basque Country got married. For 1,769 husbands (85.2%) this was their first marriage, whilst 17 widowers and 290 divorcees remarried. As regards women, there were 1798 single women who married (85.5%), 11 widows and 295 divorcees.
90.8% of husbands and 85.5% of wives were aged 30 or over
With respect to the distribution according to the age of the couple, 90.8% of husbands and 85.5% of wives were aged 30 or over. In the same period of 2024, this proportion was 91.9% for men and 87.1% for women.
In the months of April, May and June 2025, 9.2% of recently married men and 10.4% of recently married women were foreign nationals. In respect of the same quarter of the previous year, this percentage fell by 0.5 percentage points among men and increased by 0.7 points among women.
Of the total number of marriages, 2,093 were different-sex marriages (96.5%) and the other 77 were between people of the same sex (3.5%), 41 between women and 36 between men.
