Deaths in the Basque Country.
Third quarter of 2025
Highlights:
Year-on-year comparison: There were 5,379 deaths, representing an increase of 2.3% (119 more deaths) compared to the same quarter of the previous year.
Provinces: In Álava, with 713 deaths, the figure remained unchanged compared to the same quarter of 2024. In Bizkaia, with 2,904, the number of deaths rose by 2.2%, and in Gipuzkoa, with 1,762, it was up 3.3%.
Sex: A total of 2,762 women and 2,617 men died, which was an increase of 4.8% for women and a decrease of 0.3% for men.
Age: 64.9% of people who died were aged 80 or over, and 28.4% were between 60 and 79 years old. The number of centenarians who died this quarter was 122. Five children under the age of one also died.
Cause of death: Tumours were the main cause of death (28.5%), followed by diseases of the circulatory system (23.8%).
Statistical analysis
In the third quarter of 2025 the number of deaths in the Basque Country stood at 5,379, up 2.3% on the same period of the previous year, according to Eustat data.
By province, deaths increased in Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia: there were 1,762 deaths in Gipuzkoa, representing an increase of 3.3%, and Bizkaia recorded 2,904 deaths, 2.2% more than in the same period of 2024. In Álava, however, there were 713 deaths, the same number as in the third quarter of 2024.
By sex, 2,762 women and 2,617 men died, which was an increase of 4.8% for women and a decrease of 0.3% for men.
Among the deaths that occurred in this third quarter, 64.9% of those who died were aged 80 or over and 28.4% were between 60 and 79 years old. In addition, 5 deaths corresponded to children under one year of age and 122 to centenarians.
By month, deaths increased by 6.1% in August, while in July and September they were up 0.2% and 0.5%, respectively, compared to the same months of the previous year.

Tumours and diseases of the circulatory system caused 52.3% of deaths
The main causes of death were tumours and diseases of the circulatory system, which caused the deaths of 1,531 and 1,281 individuals, respectively, which means that together they accounted for 52.3% of deaths. Diseases of the respiratory system were the third leading cause of death, resulting in 389 deaths (7.2%). COVID-19 was the main cause in 67 deaths (1.2%).
The order of the leading causes of death remained the same for both sexes, although the percentage of tumours was higher among men (32.4%) than women (24.7%).

Population growth was negative in all three provinces
Population growth in the Basque Country was negative in the third quarter of 2025, since the number of deaths exceeded the number of births by 2,087. For this reason, the population fell in all three provinces: by 1,288 people in Bizkaia, 633 in Gipuzkoa and 166 in Álava.
There were 67 deaths as a result of COVID-19 in the third quarter of 2025
COVID-19 caused a total of 67 deaths (1.2% of the total), 17 fewer than in the same quarter of 2024. All these deaths were due to confirmed cases of COVID-19. By province, 44 of these deaths occurred in Bizkaia, 14 in Gipuzkoa and 9 in Álava. A total of 41 men and 26 women died from this cause, and the age group most affected was those aged 80 and over (51 people), followed by those aged between 60 and 79 (16 people).
