Births in the Basque Country. Third quarter of 2025

Highlights:

Year-on-year comparison: There were 3,292 births, which represented a decrease of 0.1% (4 fewer births) compared to the same quarter of the previous year.

Provinces: In Álava, with 547 births, there was an increase of 3.2% compared to the same quarter of 2024. In Bizkaia, with 1,616, the number of births fell by 4.7% and in Gipuzkoa, with 1,129, they rose by 5.5%.

Age of the mothers: The group with most births was women aged between 30 and 34 (35%), followed by those aged between 35 and 39 (33%). The 25 to 29 age group accounted for 14.4% of births, and the under-25s for 7.4%. Finally, the group of mothers aged 40 and over reached 10.2%.

Birth range: 1,711 were first children (52%); 1,135 girls and boys (34.5%) arrived in families that already had another child and 446 births corresponded to third or subsequent children (13.5%).

Other notable data: 50.2% of babies were born to unmarried mothers and 27.9% of mothers were foreign nationals.

Statistical analysis

In the third quarter of 2025 the number of births in the Basque Country stood at 3,292, 0.1% down on that registered in the same period of the previous year, according to Eustat data. However, in the annual cumulative total, there was an increase of 1.6%. By province, in the third quarter in Bizkaia there was a decrease of 4.7%, while in Gipuzkoa and Álava there were increases of 5.5% and 3.2%, respectively. In absolute figures, 1,616 girls and boys were born in Bizkaia, 1,129 in Gipuzkoa and 547 in Álava.

During the summer months of 2025, births outside marriage accounted for 50.2% of the total, lower than the 52% recorded in the same quarter of 2024. This percentage of unmarried mothers was 52.6% in Bizkaia, 52.3% in Álava and 45.7% in Gipuzkoa.

According to the order of birth, in the third quarter of 2025, more than half (1,711) were first children; 1,135 girls and boys (34.5%) arrived in families that already had another child, and the percentage of third or subsequent children stood at 13.7%. In the same period of 2024 this last percentage was 12.4%.

The percentage of mothers over 40 was 10.2%

In the distribution of births according to the age of the mother, the group with most births was women aged between 30 and 34 (35%), together with those aged between 35 and 39 (33%), meaning 68% of births corresponded to women in their thirties. Presenting lower percentages were the 25-29 age group (14.4%) and the under-25s (7.4%), while the group of mothers aged 40 and over reached 10.2%. It is significant that among single mothers, there is a higher percentage of mothers under 25 years old (11.3%).

There were more mothers with foreign nationality

During July, August and September 2025, the mother was a foreign national in 27.9% of births in the Basque Country. In the same period of 2024 this percentage was 25.7%. By province , this figure reached 34.4% in Álava, 26.9% in Bizkaia and 26.1% in Gipuzkoa.
