The 33 million euros in e-commerce sales were shared equally between industry and services in the Basque Country in 2024

There are more establishments that purchase electronically than those that sell, 27.8% versus 8.7%, but the value of sales (€33,081.6 million) exceeds the value of purchases (€23,311.5 million)

Sales corresponding to e-commerce, which in 2024 reached 33,081.6 million euros, were distributed practically equally between the industrial sector and the services sector, with shares of 49.7% and 49.3% respectively, while the construction sector only accounted for 1% of the total, according to data prepared by Eustat. However, purchases were mainly attributed to the services sector, 69.5% of the total, while in the industrial sector they represented 28.1%, and 2.4% in construction.

Furthermore, sales via the internet or other electronic systems have registered uninterrupted growth year after year since 2002, the first year that data became available. With these new increases, in 2024 they reached thirty-three billion euros (€33,081 million), the maximum in the available series, which represents an uptick of 10.2% compared with 2023, and more than double the 12,125 million euros from ten years previously (2014).

Purchases made via e-commerce exceeded 23 billion euros (€23,311.5 million), which was also the highest value of the series, up 7% on the figures seen in 2023, and up to 2.5 times higher than 2024 (9,326.1).

In comparison with 2023, sales corresponding to e-commerce gained 4.6 percentage points in their share of total sales, while purchases gained 4.5 percentage points. In 2014, electronic sales and purchases accounted for 38.9% and 30.6% respectively of the total turnover.

At the provincial level, in terms of e-commerce sales, there was double-digit growth in all three provinces. It was up 10.6% in Álava, 9.6% in Bizkaia and 10.6% in Gipuzkoa. Álava stands out in e-commerce purchases, with an 8.7% increase, followed by Gipuzkoa with 6.9% and Bizkaia with 6.5%.

As regards the weight of sales in each of the provinces, Bizkaia accounted for 38.5% of the Basque Country total, whereas Gipuzkoa and Álava contributed 33.6% and 27.9% respectively. In purchases, on the other hand, the participation was more disparate, with Bizkaia accounting for 50.6% of the total in 2024, whereas Gipuzkoa represented 32.3%, and Álava saw the remaining 17.1% of electronic purchases in the Basque Country overall.

Furthermore, the percentage of establishments that participated in e-commerce stood at 30.5 % in 2024, representing 47,500 establishments. This figure is 1.3 percentage points higher than the previous year. Their increase is based on those who purchase electronically (27.8%), up 0.5 percentage points compared to the previous year, and, to a lesser degree, on those who make electronic sales (8.7%), rising 0.1 percentage points.

There are more establishments that purchase electronically than those that sell, 27.8% versus 8.7%, but the value of sales (€33,081.6 million) exceeds that of purchases (€23,311.5 million)

Likewise, it can be observed that although the number of establishments purchasing electronically (27.8%) greatly exceeds those selling using the same method (8.7%), the figures for e-commerce sales (33,081.6 million euros) are higher than those for e-commerce purchases (23,311.5 million euros).

These figures vary if the size of the establishments is taken into account in terms of employment. Thus, among establishments with 10 or more employees, 40.4% use e-commerce. Also in this segment, there are more establishments who make electronic purchases (35.4%) than those who make sales by the same channels (16.4%), percentages which have hardly changed since the previous year.

With regard to the means by which e-commerce purchases were made, 49.4% of total purchases were carried out by email, 24.8% using websites and the remaining 25.6% via EDI and other networks. Regarding e-commerce sales, 34.4 % were made through websites, apps or internet sales portals, 29.2 % by email and the remaining 36.4 % via EDI and other networks.

24.3% of e-commerce sales were destined for private consumers, doubling the values from the early 2000s

As regards the type of customer to which e-commerce sales were destined in 2024, a large majority, 73.9% of total e-sales, were destined for other companies (so-called B2B trade), 24.3% were for private consumers (B2C) and the remaining 1.8% was spread over other kinds of customers, such as Public Administrations (B2G). Despite the clear dominance of sales to other companies in the total sales figures, the significant development of those destined to private consumers should be noted. Meanwhile in 2014, this type of client accounted for a little more than one in every ten euros invoiced electronically, ten years later it now accounts for one in every four euros.
