Press Release 23/10/2012
EUSTAT presents the Ecoeuskadi 2020 indicators for the first time
These indicators are associated with the defined objectives in the Basque Country Sustainable Development Strategy
For the first time, Eustat has published the series of monitoring indicators established in the Basque Country Sustainable Development Strategy (Ecoeuskadi 2020). It is a combination of 27 indicators associated with the established strategic objectives and complement the so-called headline indicators, which coincide with those defined for the Europe 2020 strategy.
From the subgroup of ten indicators subject to comparison with the European Union average, the Basque Country posted values that were better or similar in eight of them: Productivity of natural resources, GDP per inhabitant, Consolidated gross public debt, Urban waste, Transport energy consumption, PISA assessment, Official Development Assistance and C02 emissions per inhabitant.
On the other hand the IUS figures and, above all, Energy dependence, were below the EU-27 average.
Analysing trends over time, the Basque Country posted both positive and negative evolutions.
Amongst those indicators linked to competitiveness, eco-efficiency and external openness, there was growth in Productivity of natural resources and the Level of openness of foreign trade, whilst GDP per capita was down, keeping its position in the Innovation Union Scoreboard (IUS).
In relation to social cohesion and integration, the Youth unemployment rate had a negative evolution, although the Personal income concentration index and the Level of social inclusion improved.
Consolidated gross public debt of Basque public administrations as a percentage of GDP increased, as did Public social expenditure, whilst the Birth rate remained the same.
Regarding the preservation of natural resources and biodiversity, the associated indicators evolved differently: the Rural population rate rose and the Percentage of constructed areas remained the same, whereas the generation of Urban waste per inhabitant decreased. The Common birds index was also down, which implicates in this case a negative evolution.
The Energy dependence indicator remained practically the same, whilst in relation to mobility, Transport energy consumption and Goods transport by road and Private passenger transport fell, both measured as percentages out of the total.
In relation to the education system, the indicators associated with PISA Evaluation and the Scientific publications from the Basque University System evolved positively; the Continual learning indicator increased, that is, the percentage of individuals between the ages of 25 and 64 carrying out some type of formative activity, and Support for foreign dissemination of Basque culture diminished, measured via the budget destined towards that end.
The Electoral participation indicator evolved downwards whilst Complaints made to Ararteko in relation to the Administration, as an indicator of dissatisfaction with the Administration, grew in the last year considered.
Lastly, Official development assistance, as a percentage of GDP, fell, as did CO2 emissions per inhabitant.
