LARGE STORES AND FOOD CHAINS TRADE INDEX. OCTOBER 2025
Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country were down 0.1% in October 2025
Compared to the previous month, sales decreased by 1.2%
Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country saw a decrease of 0.1% in October 2025 in relation to the same month of the previous year, at constant prices and once corrected for calendar effects, according to Eustat data.
Compared to the previous month (September 2025), sales at constant prices, once corrected for seasonal effects, fell by 1.2%.
The year-on-year evolution of sales was positive in the Other Products sector, with growth of 0.1%. However, in Food, sales were down 0.2% in respect of October 2024.
In month-on-month terms (October 2025 compared to September 2025), the evolution was negative in both the Food sector, with a decrease of 1.4%, and in the Other Products sector, where the decrease was 0.9%.
In October 2025, sales in large stores and food chains increased in year-on-year terms by 0.1% in both Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa. in Álava, on the other hand, they decreased by 1.1%.
In month-on-month terms, sales fell by 0.8% in Álava, 1.3% in Bizkaia and 1.2% in Gipuzkoa.
In the cumulative period of the first ten months of the year for the Basque Country as a whole in, sales in large stores and food chains increased by 0.6% compared to the same cumulative period of the previous year, reaching 1.2% in the case of Bizkaia. In Gipuzkoa, there was no variation in the cumulative period until October compared to the same cumulative period of the previous year, on the other hand, in Álava, there was a decrease of 0.3%.
Lastly, the number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country fell by 0.3% in comparison with October 2024. In month-on-month terms, the index of employed people registered a fall of 1.4%. However in the cumulative period until October, it increased by 1.5%.

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects, and month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
