There were 1,247 marriages in the Basque Country in the first quarter of 2025, 16.8% more than the previous year
In March, marriages were up 29.2%
The number of marriages in the Basque Country during the first quarter of 2025 rose to 1,247, 16.8% more compared to the same quarter of the previous year (1,068), according to Eustat data. 602 marriages were registered in Bizkaia, 15.3% more than a year ago; there were 440 marriages in Gipuzkoa, up 23.9%; and 171 in Álava, 20.4% more. The rest (34) were registered outside the Basque Country, 30.6% less than the previous year.
Of the total number of marriages, 1,198 were different-sex marriages (96.1%) and the other 49 were between people of the same sex (3.9%), 29 between men and 20 between women. Meanwhile, civil weddings rose by 98%. This percentage was 97.8% in the same quarter of 2024.
By month, the number of marriages increased in all three months, although the greatest increase, 29.2%, was in March. In January and February weddings increased by 6.3% and 7.8%, respectively.
90.4% of husbands and 85.4% of wives were aged 30 or over
In the 1,247 weddings in the first quarter of 2025, 1,214 men and 1,197 women resident in the Basque Country entered into marriage; the remainder of the spouses resided outside of the Basque Country. For 977 spouses (80.5%) this was their first marriage, whilst 222 divorced men and 15 widowers remarried. The percentage of women entering into their first marriage was higher than that for men, standing at 985 (82.3%); the number of divorcees rose to 200 and the number of widows stood at 12.
As regards the distribution of marriages according to the age of the couples, 90.4% of husbands were aged 30 or over, whilst this percentage fell to 85.4% for wives. Compared to the same period of the previous year, this proportion dropped for both men (90.8% in 2024) and women (86% in 2024).
The percentage of foreign nationals entering into marriage decreased
In the first quarter of 2025, 17% of recently married women and 15.7% of recently married men were foreign nationals. These percentages fell in comparison with the same period in 2024, for both wives and husbands, when they were 20.1% and 16.3%,.
