Births rose by 2.4% in the first quarter of 2025 in the Basque Country



The mothers were over 40 years of age in 11.6% of births


In the first quarter of 2025 the number of births in the Basque Country stood at 3,261, which was a 2.4% increase (77 more births) compared to the same period of the previous year, according to Eustat data. The number of births rose by 6% in Álava and 4.6% in Bizkaia, however in Gipuzkoa there was a drop of 2.2%. Specifically, 1,626 children were born in Bizkaia, 1,101 were born in Gipuzkoa and 534 in Álava.


By months, the highest number of births was recorded in January, with 1,144 (35.1%), followed by March, with 1,077 (33%); in February, 1,040 (31.9%) children were born.


According to the age of the mother, the group of mothers aged 30-34 moved into first position, producing 34.1% of births. In the 35-39 age group this percentage was 33.9%. It is of particular note that the number of women who became mothers aged between 25 and 29 was 13.6%, a higher value than the 11.6% of women over 40. Lastly, in 6.7% of births the mothers were under 25 years of age


Births outside marriage accounted for 51.3% of the total, a figure higher than that for the first quarter of 2024 (49.7%). Bizkaia had higher values than the Basque Country as a whole, 55.2%, while in Álava and Gipuzkoa this percentage was lower, at 46.6% and 47.9% respectively.


According to the order of birth, in the first quarter of 2025 50.4% of births, 1,643 children, were first-born. 1,151 (35.3%) arrived in families that already had another child, and the percentage of third or subsequent children stood at 14.3%, 0.8 points more than in the same quarter of 2024.


26.6% of mothers were foreign nationals


In 26.6% of births in the Basque Country during the first three months of 2025, the mother was a foreign national, 0.6 percentage points higher than in the first quarter of 2024. In Álava the proportion of mothers with foreign nationality was 32.2%, compared to 26.1% in Bizkaia and 24.5% in Gipuzkoa.
