LARGE STORES AND FOOD CHAINS TRADE INDEX. MAY 2025
Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 2.5% in May 2025
Compared to the previous month, sales increased by 1.1%
Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 2.5% compared to the same month of the previous year, at constant prices once corrected for calendar effects. Compared to the previous month (April 2025), sales at constant prices, and once corrected for seasonal effects, increased by 1.1%.
In year-on-year terms (May 2025 compared to May 2024), the evolution of sales at constant prices was positive in both Food, with a 2.5% increase and Other Products, up 2.3%.
In month-on-month terms (May 2025 compared to April 2025), sales rose by 1.5% in the Food sector and 0.3% in the Other products sector.

By province, in May 2025, sales in large stores and food chains increased in year-on-year terms by 3.8% in Bizkaia, 1.4% in Álava and 0.6% in Gipuzkoa.
In month-on-month terms, sales rose by 2.2% in Álava and by 0.9% in both Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa.
Lastly, the number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 3.4% in comparison with May 2024. In month-on-month terms, the index of employed people registered a fall of 0.1%.

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects, and month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
