Sales in the Trade sector in the Basque Country rose by 1.2% in the first quarter of 2025
Compared to the previous quarter, sales decreased by 1.4%
The Trade sector saw an increase of 1.2%, in year-on-year terms, in the first quarter of 2025 at constant prices and once corrected for calendar effects, according to Eustat data. The Trade sector encompasses Wholesale trade, Retail trade and the Sale and repair of motor vehicles.
Compared to the previous quarter and once corrected for seasonal effects, sales fell by 1.4% in the first quarter of 2025.
Within Trade, the year-on-year evolution in sales was positive in the Retail Trade sector with growth of 2.5%, and in the Wholesale trade sector, with growth of 0.7%. By contrast, sales in the Sale and repair of motor vehicles sector were down 1.2%. All at constant prices and once corrected for calendar effects.
Compared to the previous quarter, and once any corresponding seasonal effects had been eliminated, there was a 0.4% increase in Retail trade, a 1.9% decrease in Wholesale trade and a 0.6% decrease in Sale and repair of motor vehicles.

The year-on-year performance of sales was positive in all three provinces during the first quarter of 2025. The increase in sales was 2.4% in Gipuzkoa, 1.6% in Álava and 0.4% in Bizkaia. However, in respect of the previous quarter, there was no significant variation in sales in Gipuzkoa and they were down 0.4% in Álava and 2.5% in Bizkaia.
The index of people employed in the Trade sector in the Basque Country decreased by 0.3% compared to the first quarter of 2024. However, compared to the final quarter of 2024, employment rose by 0.1%.

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects, and the quarter-on-quarter variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
